Which invention ( besides Showit of course wink.gif ) will have the most impact in the next decade?

RFID
KAWTER
wireless IP

Along with what Kawter said, Vonage and VOIP!!! Just saw a cell phone in Men's Health Magazine that Vonage will be making available! They already have a product for sale on their site that allows you to use your line when traveling!

I think the invention/innovation of Livecasting- where there is one guy that talks into a camera or one audience and everyone projects it all over the world.

They used to do something like it for studio audiences way back in the day when Bob Saget was hosting Funniest Home Videos. They would have an audience from Denver and an audience from New York. I used to laugh as a little kid and be like, "Stupid people! You are sitting there laughing at a giant television screen!"

And now they have the megachurches, like the one DJ just went to LOL!! And people really are into it because the technology is better. Or maybe it's b-cuz the guy up there is not Bob Saget!!! nana.gif

Something gynormously influential might come from nanotechnology. I sat in a lecture recently about the miniaturization of dialysis machines made possible with nanotech...they're talking about something you can implant in your arm. They also presented ideas about drugs that will target the problem so specifically that side effects won't be in the dictionary anymore. Incredible fuel cell technology is also a possible outcome, making batteries super small and super long lasting. (sorry...I just geeked out on all of you)

Liana, RFID? Is that retinal ____ identification or something?

Kevin, RFID = Radio Frequency IDentification.

David, my suggestion for invention that will have the most impact in the next decade, is something that hasn't even been invented, nor thought possible yet.

Yep - they can plant those in things already too. Gonna revolutionize a LOT of industries (travel/hospitality, shipping, retail, etc) has soon as it's a bit cheaper. Walmart has already mandated it for virtual inventory purposes.

I'm kinda with Chris tho - we probably haven't even dreampt up anything yet that is ReALLY going to revolutionize things.

Oh - and Vonage ROCKS! Will eventually be the end of the tele- COs if they keep it up.

Definitely! A college buddy of mine works for Nike developing more earth friendly processes. Nike products are repackaged (plastic, boxes and tags) multiple times from factory to store just because ID info. for each stop in the supply chain is on bar-coded stickers and plastic tags. Once you slip that chip into the fabric of tags on the product itself...it's donezo!!

Yeah - no kidding. This stuff is SOOO cool. I helped my buddies up in NYC when I lived there with their tracking system stuff. They developed the first protype shelving/invetory tracking system for Revlon and Loreal (sp?) and are these computer-geniouses so they made the program that shows you when you take a red lipstick and put a pink one where it is all that in real time on the tracking software - crazyness!!

Oh, and I read something about places like Disney using it on the grounds to activate birthday songs for VIP guests they have registered specially (they give them a card or tolken thing to carry with them on the premises and it's embedded in there). A top-notch hotel chain does the same thing with greeting their VIPs as the walk on the property...

I suffer from the same condition. Although, I prefer to think of it as fulfilled imagination rather than geekdom...it blows me away that people think of this stuff...so visionary! You don't happen to like shows about production lines and how stuff is made and sold by any chance, do you? There's one called "Made in America" hosted by one of the guys from Cheers, John something. Fascintating.

P.S. - Threadjack alert!! w00t.gif

I just heard yesterday about a "jacket" that is being created that will give you a hug, so when you're online chatting with someone, and they wanna give you a hug, the jacket will do it for them... now if the jacket could just cuddle huh?

I know we already have them but Palm OS just combined with Windows CE and they are making the next Treo phone together....there are a LOT of possibilities with that technology other than keeping up with addresses and stuff

Call me Paranoid but cool as it is, it’s even scarier “Minority Report” kind of scary. ph34r.gif

I just think it’s too easy to start tagging people. It already started as a security feature in a government buildings in I think it was a South American country (don’t remember). They have to have those chips implanted in them if they want their job. No Joke

As for the Invention I think it will be a major transportation invention I saw a report on what is basically flying cars that are predicted to be common for the upper middle class in the next 10 to 20 years.

TiVo. It could easily become the datacenter of the household. And I'm addicted to the boop-boop sound it makes.

The intra vas device. It's the only contraception proven to be 100% effective in all case studies (it's legal in India and China and is being assessed by the FDA right now). If it doesn't become really popular, it'll only be because men would still rather leave contraceptive responsibility up to women. tongue.gif

Don,t know if its an invention but genetic engineering would be my guess.

I think that the BeDazzler is going to take over the world by storm....every time I watch Tana do those infomericals- I get chills up and down my spine!

I am not sure what the invention will be but Aubrey de Grey says that the first person to live to be 1000 years old (yes thousand) is alive today. It sounds ridiculous but watch his talk on TED. He is pretty convincing. He has almost convinced me.

Ohhhhhh..... good question.

I'd say "really crazy small stuff that integrates a lot of other stuff" - kind of the direction of the iphone. I bet we're carrying a fully capable computer along with very cool screen projection technology and imput methods that will serve as our complete portal to information of any kind. It'll interface with everything else around us.

There are so many of these technologies out there, but now makers are starting to get serious about putting them all in one small convenient package that is super user friendly (and the super user friendly part is what's been lacking up until now).

That and clean renuable fuel. There is SO much money to be made in that. If I didn't love my job so much I'd seriously consider setting up a lab for chemistry and electronics testing and development. Lots of very cool ideas on how to make fuel and how to make it practical. Own a few of those patents and you'll be a billionare (at least many piles of millions) by retirement age. Not to mention there's a lot of free money out there to help set up those sorts of operations so even someone with limited startup capitol could get an operation like that off the ground.

It's going to be a pretty exciting world for our kids for sure.

I would love a phone that lets me write, send and receive emails, all without making me type or read a single thing. Essentially, a totally verbal system so that I can hear and respond to other people's needs on the go! (does this already exist?)
