Full Version: How many images do you shoot?

I have seen several threads on how many images people show to the clients ranging from 300 to 1000+. I am in the 500-ish category. I am just wondering how many images you all actually shoot? I think that I have a film hangover, and I am a pretty conservative shooter compared to some of my friends. I average about 1000, and I since the majority are usable, I spend so much time just trying to cut it down to the 500-600 or so that my clients are happy with. Sometimes though, I really feel like I am undershooting, I dunno. I think I might be more apt to try some fun, new things if I'm shooting more.

We are two shooters, so normally we shoot between 2000 and 2500. We have shot as many as 3300 before.

umm too much? laugh.gif

I know I sometimes struggle to get it below 500, but of course, in retrospect I look at them and can see where I can cull some more...

I have the capacity to shoot about 1800 myself, but I try to keep at least one card aside for emergencies, but then add another 400 or so from my assistant.... smile.gif

With 2 shooters, my wife (carrie v) and I shoot around 1200 combined. We edit down to around 350-500 from there.
Mark
My wife and I are our main shooters and our two children also shoot with us. We normally shoot between 3500 - 5000 depending on the day.

Love it when I'm shooting. Hate it when I'm editing however I love the range of images to choose from.

between my assistant and I, we shoot between 1,500-3,000 (depending on the length of wedding and the location.) I usually end up using 100 per each hour that I'm there. So on average, I give them 600-800.

phillip, lol, glad to hear I am not completely abnormal. I don't feel like I am missing anything, I guess I just tend to take a bit more time before pressing the shutter. I dunno, or something, lol. I supposed part of it might have to do with the fact that many of my portfolio building weddings were very small and short.

Hi Amy,

We shoot with 2 and usually shoot almost 2500 and show clients around 1000. I hope that helps.

Also, I love your post processing and would love to talk to you about it sometime.

I shoot about 1200 on a 8 hour wedding.. and then usually end up with about 1000

I typically shoot between 500 - 800 and Steve usually shoots 1200 - 2000. I am pretty conservative when I shoot but it's nice when I do more to have more options. When we shoot together we almost always end up with over 2500 images.

I shoot alone and somewhere between 2200-5000.

I am way, way on the low end. Maybe cause I spent a year as a second shooter or something, but I usually shoot between 700-1000 and deliver around 300. I want to shoot more, but I don't know what I could possibly do... although I should keep in mind that only like two of my weddings this year had any extended dancing. The rest had like... a dance. A few didn't have any at all whatsoever. :/

I've been trying to cut back b/c I was way out of control on my first few weddings as the primary. I shoot around 1300/7hours (my sweet, second-shooting husband about 650).
Karen
When I'm by myself, I shoot between 1200-1800. With a second shooter, the total comes to around 2500-3000. I edit it down to between 500-800.

But keep in mind, st louis weddings often have this obscene 3-5 hour lag between the ceremony and reception. So, alot of that is from the time I spend with the bridal party between the two events.

You know, I kept hearing about these people shooting WAY more than I do. I tried to shoot a ton a couple times, and couldn't do it. One time I thought I'd shot at least 1200 and it was barely 900. I normally end up with about 500 keepers out of 700 or so shots.

But that's a great keep ratio!!

Mark, that's EXACTLY what I feel like. I've had days that I tried shooting more, and in the end I thought I went *crazy*, but had like 1300 images total. Oooooh, how CRAZY of me, lol, but I do also have a nice keep ratio.

Depends on the size, length of time and activity of the wedding, but anywhere between 900-2000 images. Average . . . ? 1200-then cull down to 900+ with about 12 categories.

What are the 12 categories, other than the standard five: getting ready, ceremony, details, portraits, reception?

Hey Megan:
Okay here goes: Say I have an "event #123456" and inside it I put: 01_engagement, 02_preps, 03_ceremony, 04_portraits, 05_intros, 06_dances, 07_toasts, 08_people (i.e., couples), 09_partying, 10_cake, 11_garterbouquet, 12_details, then maybe 13_intimate or "end" shots. This makes it so much easier for people to browse through the event without taking so much time-they go right to the category they want-and hopefully buy lots of photos! Sometimes I might do "02_guypreps & 03_girlpreps", etc. depending on how big the wedding is.
I use Pictage so this works really well with their event submission.
Hope this helps! Kim
