Just thought some of you guys might want to know that Apple just updated their store with Aperture 2

Another question, does anybody use Aperture here? I have it and have played with it but since Lightroom, I dont' really have any use for it. Wondering how many changes this update brings.
MWang
There were a few Aperture guys on here, but I think the biggest thing was that it couldn't do global presets... DJ summed it up here http://cutframetv.com/view_video.php?viewk...c8436e924a68c45

We shouldn't have to pay for D3 and D300 support. That's lame.

Bleh. We bought Aperture when it was first released and it's basically a CMS for our house pictures.

Lightroom is the way to go.

You have to PAY for D3 and D300 support??????!!!!! Another nail in Aperture's coffin.

Well, I think the new OS update included D3/D300 support, but I think it comes with this version. That feels like paying for support to me. I don't think OS X 10.4.11 has it yet...

Anyway, Aperture < Lightroom.

i use aperture all the time. i couldnt live without it.

now, i only use it for a few things, like my shoot management, which i think its outstanding in that regard, and a few other things, but for themost part i do everything in CS3.

now whether or not all these changes are making it more worth it, i just dont know if i can justify the £50 or not.

every one knows i am a huge apple fan. i bought aperture the day it came out. i was disappointed with it and i have since bought lightroom and i use neither. (jpeg shooter here). i have been in touch with folks on the aperture development team and begging them for some new features and it looks like they've listened. i will be getting Aperture 2.0 if for no other reason, than you now how the ability to customize the album pages sizes, and have the ability to output them in different formats. i lobbied hard for that feature.

the book design feature was always cool, the ability to simply drag and drop photos, resize and recompose them made it just about the coolest piece of album design software available, but it only outputted an 8.5x11 horiz bound book to their internal print shop. Lame! now you can make the books whatever size you want, and output them in a variety of different ways. exciting!

there looks to be quite a few other great new features and i'll go ahead and be the guinea pig for you guys and let you know my full report soon.

i've been working with the apple guys for a long time now - before they released aperture - its been great, they havent always listened to everything but its nice to know that they take some of my suggestions to heart. i've got the upgrade, trying it out now!

I, too, bought Aperture the day it came out (at the time, it was the only thing that would process my 5D files (back when the 5D was hot off the shelf). I loved it, but grew weary of the spinning beach ball, and the 'ball and chain' of the library.

I switched over to LR about a year ago, and have been very content....but....

now I have a smokin' fast MacPro (hopefully less beachball, more cowbell) and I see some features that look awesome, like DNG support, the album design stuff (thanks for the heads-up, [b]!) as well as vignetting.

so I'm running a test right now...I shot an E-session yesterday, and am doing a full edit in LR, and will run the same images in Aperture 2.0...and we'll see where the chips fall!

I think this is great news, now LR is going to do their release soon and once again one up them... thumbsup.gif

I think that Apple has really upped the bar on this one in terms of features. I almost bought lightroom the other day, now I'm going to wait and see what the reviews are from people using Aperture 2. If there is no other benefit, the fact that Adobe now has to release an upgrade to lightroom is great news.

I processed over 100K images last year with Aperture -

Every wedding is keyworded by vendor, flowers, color, lots of different stuff. Star ratings are the bomb. Runs like a greased pig even on my older dual 2.0 workstation.

I've already purchased the upgrade and am looking forward to the new vignette and color enhancement features.

The first version sucked, 1.5 was a huge upgrade.

Now I get home, load the wedding into the desktop, and when I am ready to make selects, I access the wedding wirelessly over my network. Nothing beats sitting on the couch infront of the TV picking selects.

Edited: The next version of my website will actually use the keyword features so brides can search for specific detail shots and stuff...

All of which can be done LR as well.

Fair enough - but - does LR sync with your iPhone? That's a great marketing tool if you haven't heard...

I have an iPhone??? blink.gifI did watch the video on the new book layout feature, very sweet.

so cool I might have to give aperture another try! the books feature sounds very interesting..I have always really loved designing in that tool but not much else really lol.

Did you see on the "In Action" Page our very own Bob Davis and Sara France? Thats awesome!!!

Does Aperture also have the color labels as well as the star ratings? That could be a deal breaker for me.....

AND if it does have them, do the star and label ratings appear in Adobe products like Bridge once you've exported the files out of Aperture?

Star ratings don't show up in adobe products

Can you now do edits to a group of images at the same time?

As much as I LOVE Apple, and as much as I really wanted to like Aperture, this was the biggest factor for me to look to Adobe. I shoot RAW so presets and the ability to make global edits are vital in my workflow. Can Aperture 2 do this now?

I LOVE how A2 is so fully integrated with the other Apple apps like iPhoto (which we use for our personal shots) but I really don't see the support with presets and plug-ins like I do for Lightroom. The NAPP is 100% on board with Lightroom and their support (and free stuff) are too awesome to overlook as a factor in the final decision.

Looking forward to the additional details others can provide!!

I was just playing around a bit yesterday with LR and Aperture 2...
I imported some LR-created DNG's into Aperture.

Aperture did not seem to recognize the changes I had made in the DNG file, and simply gave me a decent preview.

the same DNG's were imported back into a new LR database, and all of the changes were recognized.

I'm going to keep playing with the new Aperture and see what else is new and fresh.

I've been playing with the book feature and it looks like it can only output to PDF, unless you want to print to your desktop printer. I was hoping that it can export to high-res jpgs so that you can send it to your fav album company.

Any other updates?
