PocketWizard Transceivers...
Nadil Khan
how do you hook it up?
Chris Mathews
You need to buy some PocketWizards and you need to buy a special cord for the Vivitars.

Here they are for $14:
http://www.flashzebra.com/wizardcables/vivitar.shtml

Then you put the transmitter on your camera's hot shoe and then you plug the receiver into your flash with that cord.

Choose the channel you want on the transmitter and receiver and then you are all set!

Thanks for that link Chris. I've always figured there was a cord like that out there but I had never seen one. I've been using a Wein Safe Sync attached to my flash shoe which allowed me to attach the PC to Miniphone cable that comes with the pocketwizards. Nice to simplify my setup.

I love my Pocket Wizards, but if I didn't already have a bunch of them I would wait and see how well the Radio Popper Jr works. He says they will be in the $25 range. The wireless TTL version is of no interest to me but this Jr version looks like it could give Pocket Wizard a very hard time.

No problem! The other thing that will simplify a set-up like this is the "Remote Caddy"

I cant live without these now:

So should I purchase a Radio Popper jr. instead of a Pocket Wizard?

Korean made Flashwaves could be an alternative:

Mario, have you used these? By looking at the post above and the site for the company in Korea, I don't see how to connect the trigger to the camera. Or what about connecting a 120j to the slave?

Hi, Ramiro.

I didn't used them, just ordered some days ago - hope they'll arrive soon ...

You can simply put the trigger (transmitter) in camera's hot shoe. Receivers has 3 ways to connect: a 3.5mm miniphone plug, a pc sync plug and a hot shoe built-in.

You can see the different ways to connect at this page:

Oh Wow! those look great. From the original image of the transmitter on the front page it looked like it was only a rectangular piece, but I see it has a hot shoe. It looks like they are a really nice alternative. Let us know what results you get when you get yours. I am currently using the Bowen's Pulsars, but if these work good I'll go with them. What I don't like about the Pulsars is that when the flash is set at a power lower then 1/2, it double fires the flash and thus consumes batteries much faster. Let me know how you like them once you get them. Thanx for posting this.

Look at this, Ramiro:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat...thread=26540822

I owned the Bowens Pulsars, too. And wasn't very satisfied because of the same reasons you aren't. The reason for double flashing are electrical interferences. They exist at full power, too, but the flashes charges too slow at full power for double firing ...

I sold mine and get some PWs. No double firing, no misfiring. But they are sort of bulky and always need the right cables. So I will try the korean triggers.

The one thing I like about the Pulsars, and the reason I got them is for the ability to fire strobes on different channels, but also to be able to fire them all at the same time from the trigger by simply selecting the "All" channel. The way I used this feature is that I setup my 120j bouncing off the ceiling and a Nikon speedlight pointed directly at the dance floor. When I want nice even light, I fire the 120j only, when I want a more dramatic lighting or maybe a rim light, then I fire the Nikon on the different channel, but when I want both, I simply move the channel selector on the trigger to "All" and both of them fire off. I don't think any other trigger system has that feature, unless one use a PW Multimax, which is very expensive.

You're right, Ramiro. That's a great function I wish some other manufacturers would build in in their radio transmitters/transceivers. But the doublefiring bug is a heavy argument against them ...

Still got my Flashwaves today – and I love them - even without that single/group thing!!!

First quick test: Works perfect with all of my flashes (Canon 580 EX, 580 EXII and 430 EX!!!!, Nikon SB-800, SB-80DX and SB-26). No misfiring, not when connected with cable, even in hotshoe.

Didn't make a distance test.

Smaller than my Pocket Wizards an much more reliable than my old chinese poverty wizards (ebay triggers). My ebay triggers work well with Nikon flashes, but don't with Canon flashes (misfiring).

Flashwaves do the job very well with both systems!

Hi Mario, that is awesome information, thanx for sharing. If you still have your 120j or Quantum T2s, could you run a test on them and let us know if they worked fine. I am seriously considering putting my Pulsars on ebay and getting these instead. Thanx again for all the info.

Edit: As for distance, 50m is around 165 ft. and I think that is plenty for reception and church use. The one issue I am having with those is the sync speed, they seem to sync at a max of 1/180, which I think it's lame. I also think that my pulsars 1/200 is also lame, and that is one thing I like about the MultiMax, it can sync up to 1/500.

You might try these low-cost radio remotes:

http://www.alienbees.com/rft1.html - cost you about $80 for a tx/rx pair.

I've been using this type of cheapo radio remote for years, and they're absolutely perfect for my studio work.

Tomorrow, I will test the Flashwaves on a Qflash T5d-R, but I have no doubt that they will trigger the Qflash.

Sync speed is 1/180 says the manufacturer, but I tested it with 1/250 on my Canon 400D, that's the fastest sync speed without black bars.

Multimax can sync up to 1/500, but only when your camera does so!! Nikon D70 syncs up to 1/500, Canon 1D (the first of the 1D series!) also. I don't know other digital cams with a faster sync speed than 1/250 ...

It triggers 120J and Quantum Qflash T5d-R, too.
