Can anyone help me out? I can't find the option to do this, and while i've never done it before, i'd assume that if it does what i think it does, it will enable me to still find the original file name after the files have been renamed....
any responses are much appreciated. thanks!

I've had to deal with LR renaming issues this week. I don't think once you rename in LR that you'll still keep the original image # in tact. If you want to keep the orig. image # in tact I would rename the files upon export. On another note I had files from a 2nd shooter that would not allow me to rename w/in LR and I think it's because of her metadata.

When you rename a batch of files (whether it's on import or afterwards), you can select an option like Custom Name-Original File Number (it's on a drop down menu). If the options on the menu aren't exactly what you're looking for, click Edit... at the bottom and you will have a smorgasbord of options to choose from.
The Custom Name-Original File Number option is handy if you want to go from IMG_3443 to Cornett-3443 (assuming your client's name is Cornett).
If you didn't rename on import, you can do a batch rename by selecting all the ones you want to rename, then hitting F2. You can still keep the original image number.

i know how to do that. what i'm really worried about is preserving the original RAW filenames so i know which ones to go back to if i ever have to pull from my DVD backup, which never gets touched my LR or any other software to avoid corruption. i frequently have LR corrupt files, and it's really time consuming to find the right file after the one in LR has been renamed and I need to pull the other one from the DVD backup. oh well... we'll figure something out.

When you are in the Library module, if you look at the metadata menu on the right hand side, it has the File Name (current name, Cornett-3443) then Original Filename (IMG_3443.CR2). It's at the top of the Metadata tab or window or whatever you call it, at least it is on mine (which I have set to show All the metadata because I am kind of geeky like that). So yes, it does keep the original file name even if you don't use the original numbers in your renaming setup.
Just checked--if you have it on the default metadata view it does NOT show the original filename--just change the metadata view to All and you should be set.
Sorry I didn't understand the question the first time; hope I got it right this time.
