How do you use the folder structure in Lightroom for storing photos? Do you keep it simple as in one folder called weddings and dump everything in it and then use collections to sort them? Or do you name each folder at import by date or event or both? I'm really struggling on a good workflow at import for Lightroom so I'm curious to what others are doing.

Thanks
Kari
This is what I do... I have one external drive that all my current work is on. I have each customer name in a folder. When I download my cards, I put them on that external drive, in a folder under their name. (Example: Barricklow wedding). Then, I import them into lightroom at thier current location. When I go to work on them in lightroom, I go to that folder in lightroom. When I export them, I export them into the same folder, in a subfolder labled "jpegs" or "tiffs" or however I export them. I also will export them in small size files for uploading to my online proofing, since I self fulfill my orders. I will label this folder "online proofing" so I know they are small size jpegs.

Wow, thanks for the quick response.

So you work on your photos "off" the external drive? Is that slow as far as performance?

So your typical folder structure in Lightroom would we event names. Like Barricklow wedding, Jones e-session, etc. ???

I used to keep all my current work on my C drive, but then my C drive got too full, and my new camera has even larger files. So, I transfered all my current "open jobs" to one external drive (with everyting backed up). I do not notice any difference in speed when working on the external drive. The only thing I do notice is ocasionally if I haven't been saving or making any changes that would cause the external drive to run, sometimes my drive goes to "sleep", and it takes a minute to "Wake up" when I use it agian.

Yes, that is my typical folder structure. I just look up the folder with the clients last name, and it is in alphabetical order.

Im with you. I love LR but Im still trying to figure out how it works best for me. Currently I have a master folder in my hard drive called "Wedding Originals". For each event I create a subfolder by the events date and name. I copy the images from my Cf card to that subfolder, back up to my external and burn a DVD. Then I import that subfolder into a master LR folder called "Wedding Originals". I make my adjustments and export to another master folder on the hard drive with the events date and name. Im sure there is a better way but for now that works for me.
