I am looking to replace my Epson 2200 printer and I have narrowed down my choices between the Epson 3800 and the 4880.

The 2200 has been a great printer, I used it primarily for promotional pieces and pieces that were delivered already framed. After testing a 3800 in my studio for the last 2 weeks I must say that I really like this printer. I feel the print quality is good enough to replace many of my lab prints that are 16x20 and smaller.

Right now I'm leaning heavily toward the 3800 but would love to hear feedback on both of these printers, including print finishing, what types of prints you produce (reprints, album, framed, unframed, etc), do you use a RIP, which one and since owning this printer have you reduced the amount of work you send to the lab?

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan I do not own either. I was looking into the 4800 at one time. Cost-wise the 4880 is better in the long term for consumables. The larger ink cartridges and ability to use roll media will be much less over time.

Also, one thing that most folks don't think about is print coating. Were you planning on coating your prints or using them raw? The coating issue is what stopped me from doing my own printing. To me the uncoated prints didn't look as good as a non-coated RA print from the lab. Just a thought. Good luck.
