I'm tempted by the 300d, since my only backups are several film bodies; apparently you can buy a shutter from canon for $40, but I don't know if I have the skills to pay the bills in terms of opening up a camera and doing the work myself.

yeah from what I've heard the replacement by canon costs about $200 and the part costs $40 alone. So $160 labor is high but they bill 4 hours or something so not "too" bad - for what would essentially be a new shutter, another 40,000 clicks on a backup body would get you pretty far. The cam is in decent shape - scuff marks from sitting it down, etc. It's obviously used but not at all in bad shape - I use my tools as such but I also treat them pretty well. Never dropped, slammed, hit, etc. lol
