Full Version: CMYK conversion is so awful!

So I am helping out a local party rental place with some wedding photos of some of the events he and I have done together, and he is using them in his new catalog.
I talked to the printer today and of course they need the files (tomorrow) in CMYK. I have always hated what the conversion does to the color. But one of the main features of these images is the neat green glass dinner plates. Well they look HORRIBLE. There has got to be a better way to do this.
Anyone have any ideas? I'd like these to look their best of course.

Thanks in advance!

A good printer would do the conversion for you.

But the point about CMYK conversion is just like any other conversion or print job: you adjust the colors after the conversion so that the image looks good using the correct output profile (like US Sheetfed or similar).

Set your image to show Proof CMYK colors in Photoshop and then make your adjustments.

I always do the conversion first, then make the adjustments, I'm ust not having any luck restoring or even coming close to the collor gammut of the RGB green. (because obviously it is CMYK not red GREEN Blue) But I though there might be a trick to holding onto some of that color or maxing out the green end of the CMYK color space. smashpc.gif Is the only way to keep true color (because these plates really are that green) to shoot in CMYK to begin with when shooting for a catalog?

I don't think you can shoot in CMYK. These just may be out of the color gamut.

Plus, whatever you see on the screen (even with the correct color profile) has a very good chance of shifting depending on the press, the printing resolution, and the inks and stock they use.

This is where you need the printer's help and advice.

And have you tried looking at an online color wheel?
