Okay so when I am finished editing a wedding I go into the folder on my computer and do a batch rename on all the finished images that I will present to the Bride and Groom, for example "Smith Wedding" and it will re-name them like this....Smith Wedding (1), Smith Wedding (2), Smith Wedding (3).
Then when I get the proofs printed it send them back all out of order like this:
Smith Wedding (1), Smith Wedding (10), Smith Wedding (100).
I have to go thru and re-sort them
So what's the trick how do I get them to stay in Sequential order?
(FYI I do not use bridge or photoshop, lightroom only! Don't know if that matter or not)

When you rename them, you have to rename them a 3 digit number, like this:
001, 010, 100
You can choose this in both photoshop or lightroom.

Yup, just use the same number of digits for all of them. I usually use 4 (so...0001, 0002, 0003, 0004, etc)

I usually use the date format first: (YYYYMMDD) 20071126_textinhere_0001.*
If I had all my files together and not in folders (gasp) I could still find everything by date.
My text identifier is something simple like _eBS_ (Esession - Ben + Sarah)
I arrange the photos in the order I want them - usually just sort by date created (if using 2 cameras, make sure they have the same date / time!) and batch rename!

In Bridge... SHIFT COMMAND R (batch rename). If there are 10-99 use the two digit option. If there are 100-999 images use the 3 digit option. If there are 1000 - 9999 images use the 4 digit option.

I also find it helps to have the sequence number first then the name. That way programs will absolutely sort them without any hitch. Also, sometimes our galleery may not display the full filename depending on the monitor the client is using. If they can see the number and the first part of the name such as
001 jones brideready
100 jones ceremony
200 jones reception
and so forth.
I always have the numbers run sequentially throug the entire job, i.e. I don't restart at 001 with each section. Again if all the client can get is the number i'll be able to find it.

If you don't want to use bridge or lightroom, faststone also can rename with leading zeros.
I use faststone to change the file timestamp to the exif date/time shot, then renumber them "LastName_####.jpg" - that way no matter when they were converted, as long as my cameras are in sync, the files are always in order.
www.faststone.org - free.
Oh, on a similar note, has anyone found a program to batch adjust the timestamp of images, like when you forget to sync your cameras? I've written some programs in PHP to fix it, but I've got to believe there's something easier out there.

First of all, I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't know this.
Second of all, stamp moron on my forehead because I STILL can't get them to re-name correctly in lightroom - I've tried every re-naming option they have and it will still won't work right

Anyone care to share the steps? I mist be doing something wrong.

Google "a better name finder" -
It's the best re-name that I know of. You can easily sync X amount of cameras down to the minute if all cameras set to the same time.
If you have 100 images, start naming at 001
If you have 1000 images start at 0001
There are many options how you can custom name your files.
So fast and easy...cheap too. Check it out.

I use iView Media Pro (still available for $99!) Mac or Windows.
On the PC there's a sweet program called Breezebrowser that'll work!

I'm also having problems with synch and secuence on my files...
When I import to iPhoto, everything is fine but when I export from iPhoto to a folder on mi HD, then everything starts to fall apart...
I then open my folder with PS7 and they are put of secuence!!
How can I remedy this? I think I can always go back and import directly to my HD's folder and then rename on PS7...
I think I will try Breezebrowser and see if that works...
Any suggestions?
Thanks!!

Sorry, it's called A Better Finder Rename. Gary Fong uses it.
I used to use Iphoto and Iview. I like ABFR sooo much better.
Here's the link.

I found this to be a problem also. In my case it was because the proofing site I upload to arranges images in a different numerical order. So I just number the images 0001,0002 etc. That way 1 is 1 and two is two. Light Room does this well on export but you can also use a freeware file renamer.
