I just bought all my Canon gear today! After much debate, and going back and forth, I bought my self a 5d. Now here's the thing. I hate my computers!
ACR raw conversion for my D200 sucks. Skin turns orange, details become bloomy and muddy. And now ACR raw for my 5d sucks in much the same way. What am I doing wrong!? It's BOTH my computers, but when I saw my raw files on someone else's computer, they were GORGEOUS... so what is it! I've calibrated my monitor with eye one already, and it really hasn't helped. Because Jpegs look awesome, and raw files suck.
Someone told me to measure my files by how they print. But how am I supposed to even know what they will look like if they look like poop when I'm sending them out? AFKASDKAJDGHGH!!!!!!
HELP! PLEASE!

Not that I know much about it...
but you have the latest RAW driver, right? (At least I'm pretty sure you need a driver... I just installed the latest software to make my computer read it when I got my DSLR)

Make sure you've updated. Other than that, try Lightroom? I MUCH prefer it to ACR.

Hey Punam,
I just got Spyder3...you should come by some time and we'll calibrate your monitor with that. It makes a HUGE difference.

Girl, you're crazy! I thought you said you had the D3 coming in the mail...
In any case, definitely download and try Lightroom.

You may need to take your laptop into a store and hook it up to a new monitor. If that changes things then you'll have figured out the issue -- the monitor.
Now, on the Canon switch I second Shane. Why on earth would you switch to Canon with the D3 and D300 release in literally a couple of days? Is there still time to return the 5D?

Not to mention rumors of the 5D replacement coming possibly this month or next...

As you said your images look bad on your computer but fine on other people's and JPEG's are fine, it sounds like you have some weird auto-presets in ACR or something is just wrong with ACR. If that is the case, trash Bridge/ACR and reinstall, that should take care of it.
ACR vs. Lightroom is a totally personal choice. I used LR for 9 months, never liked it and am now back to CS3/ACR. For my workflow it is faster and yields better files. Don't go spending the money on LR without first reinstalling Bridge/ACR, that would be a big waste.

Hello wonderful people!
I know you might think I'm crazy, but I got a 5d because the replacement is coming out soon - I saved 700 bucks in rebates and ended up paying less for a 5d, 24 1.4, 70-200mm, 85 1.8, batteries, flashes, cf cards for less than the price of a D3... and the (jpeg) colors have changed my world!
Raw, however... well. I'd like to end my relationship with Raw. Here is what I've been using for my conversion - on two computers -both suck- -I also recently uninstalled and reinstalled all my programs due to a system failure on my desktop - I've updated up my wazoo, and I've calibrated with Eye One. (I don't think its a calibration problem, because my jpegs look and print just fine!)
-Lightroom - the latest version (which I generally don't prefer - my images always come out looking so bloomy and blegh)
-Bridge and CS3 (same results as light room, but I prefer it when dealing with jpg)
-DxO
-Preview on Mac
I think I'm just going to become a master of my camera, nail my jpegs and never speak to raw again. I'm getting the colors I want out of my 5d and it doesnt have 100 hot pixels like my D200 does, so yeah. It's coming to an end. Poo has too many weddings next year to be getting on this way. And I've gone through a whole 500GB drive in 3 weeks!
But I love love love my 5d! and that 24 1.4.... that really was the reason I switched. a 1k lens as opposed to a 5k camera and a 3k 28 1.4... and pretty colors...

It kind of makes sense, but with the arms race between Nikon and Canon heating up I'd hate to buy a two-year-old body when its replacement is imminent. The technology is just getting so amazing I know I'd covet the new features and performance of the newer body -- especially if the price difference is only a few hundred bucks.

RAW has so many advantages over JPEG. I'd reconsider on RAW, but that's your prerogative of course.
Just imagine you're Bobby Brown...

Well, that seems unnecessary. There is obviously something wrong with your computer, I would get it fixed rather than give up on RAW.
Have you google searched your problem?

yes, and I've posted it on this forum a few times, and also on a few other forums. I've pretty much let everyone know i have color problems in hopes that some one will miraculously know what I should do.
and it's both my computers - my imac and my macbook.
Thanks for the help everyone! But I just can't think at this point what the advantages are in shooting raw... I have work to do!
Also, Happy Thanksgiving!
