I am going to purchase a couple of domain name's and am wondering who I should go thru... I have heard of GoDaddy and Register.com.

Who do you use? Why do you like them (or dislike them)?
Johnny
godaddy.com

Cheapest I've found on the web.
And when buying a domain, I like to be in control of it.
So buying via godaddy allows me full control over my domains.

All of my domains are purchased thru Godaddy.com. Nice to have them all kept in one place.

I use GoDaddy. It's cheap, and I've had no problems with them at all.

I agree about GoDaddy, but be careful when checking out. They ask you the web-equivalent of "Do you want fries with that?" about 1,000 times. Look VERY carefully at every checkbox and make sure you're not signing up for five years of hosting, a life insurance policy, a gym membership, and a 10-pack at the local car wash! smile.gif

Seriously, just go slowly through the steps and only purchase what you need. Don't give in to temptation!

I love GoDaddy, they've got great customer service!

MediaTemple! They are $20 a month, but you get 1T of disc space & the BEST, AMAZING customer service I've EVER had! I use to have one of those "cheap/free" sites & had so many issues, and no phone # to call. I HIGHLY recommend this company. You can keep buying additional domains for $15/year & they are all hosted in one spot!!A small price to pay for excellence : )http://www.mediatemple.net/webhosting/gs/

[EDIT]I forgot to mention, but I'm pretty sure they host big companies like Nike & Starbucks. They're bound to be a good host smile.gif

I use 123-reg.co.uk. They're pretty good although actually realising you've logged in takes a while. You have to scroll through all their "important announcements" before you get to the control panel access. Thus far none of their announcements have been of any interest to me whatsoever.

*snicker* So true. Just keep clicking "no" ... and eventually you'll get to the actual checkout part.

I use godaddy for all of my domains. I've never had a problem with them. When they notice something that can save you money, they actually call (not harass) you and let you know. I highly recommend them.

godaddy - and use the quick checkout option that those guys above don't seem to have seen. wink.gif It skips the fries.

I like godaddy because they give you virtual hosting for the domain so you can get properly setup while you transfer it to a real host like Powweb or Westhost.

Powweb still hasn't fixed its MySQL issues -- even after downgrading from MySQL 5.

Here's a quote from the Powweb forums...from a moderator:

"And as a Powweb Moderator It saddens me to totally agree with you, but I must. Moving MySQL driven apps until Powweb 'fixes' email/mysql should not be a chore you are forced to do. I myself am very dismayed at the appauling slowness of a suitable timeline response let alone a fix to these issues. We have all screamed "fix it please", I guess we don't rank to high in the model. It's very self defeating."

GoDaddy certainly is cheap for registering domains, however if you're not ready to put something on your page then they will park it full of their content and make money from your domain until you use it... so be aware.

Have a quick look around for a host for your site first... you might well find one which includes a good deal on registration. Always be sure to look for recommendations on your choice.

These are some of the top rated hosting companies out there. I know people who use and are satisfied with these. You should give some thought as to the type of site you'd like to have ... will it be necessary to add something like Photocart or one of the other gallery/ shopping cart features? In that case you should have a look at hosting companies which support these. Same thing goes for say using a Wordpress or TypePad blogging software platforms.

There are lots of good options out there and you will find plenty of opinions on each of them. wink.gif Good luck.

I used Dreamhost.com. My site in 3 years time has been knowingly offline maybe like 3 times? Twice was when California had rolling blackouts. Dreamhost said they had backup generators from the company they lease office space from, but that office lied. They switched to new, and better leasing.

Top notch company. It's got all the built in tools, stats, registrations, one click installs (wordpress, gallery 2, etc).

Here's their pricing page.

http://dreamhost.com/hosting.html

5 TERABYTES of Space.

They add 2 gig of space a week!

5 TERABYTES of bandwidth

40 GB of bandwidth added each week!

Yes, you sign up, and they continue to add space and bandwidth to your account.

No additional charge unless you're insane and are so insanely famous that people in 3rd world countries all visit your website at once. =o)

I use the "MY CRAZY DOMAIN" plan and paid 119.00, for 1 year of hosting (3 years ago). The price is cheaper now if you pay more upfront.

Domain registration is free with hosting, and then only 9.95 on top of that. Domains can share hosting plans.

If you need a discount, email or private message me and I will give you a discount code for a percentage off and you'll automactically save money.

Thanks for reading, God bless.

What *exactly* are you trying to run? I have taskfreak, tiddlywiki, cmd sites x2, todolist demo, sugarcrm, oscommerce, wordpress blogs x2 and about 5 other mysql databases running. I was one of those experiencing NIGHTMARE downtimes and almost switched myself. I'm currently having *no* issues though. Maybe once a week. Instead of 18 hrs a day.

I mean - I just don't see the issues now...sucks that you do though. sad.gif

I use 1and1.com, they've been real quick with getting me any info that I need and I haven't had any problems. =)

We were running less than you, a Wordpress blog and a SkooksKart. Both would have severe latency or be completely down -- and then magically up again two minutes into a tech support call -- for over a two month period. Powweb STILL has not committed to a date that the MySQL slowness issues will be resolved. We left over two months ago after at least two months of up and down service levels.

The sad thing is that it wasn't even consistent. Some days it would be fine and other days it would be completely hosed.

Powweb was a good host for a long time but once they were acquired our sites became a lot less reliable. Their forum is still buzzing with anger related to the issues so I know that it wasn't just us with the MySQL problems.

Westhost is where it's at, IMO.
