Full Version: Portable studio

I'm a location photographer although I do have studio access (I use somebody else's).

I'm building up a portable go-anywhere studio based on Canon speedlights. Thus far I have a 420EX, 430EX (on the way) and a 580EX (also on the way).

As far as stands and backgrounds I haven't thought that far yet. With stands for the 420 and 430 (I'll use ettl metering) I had thought of putting a $4 tripod mount on the flashes and mounting them on camera tripods. I have one that's lightweight and too flimsy for anything serious so I figured it'd make a nice lightstand. It goes up to about 5 feet with the column fully cranked. I could get a second cheapie tripod and do the same the other side.

For background I had thought of leaning one of the Botero collapsibles against a wall but I don't know how easy they are to fold solo or how rigid they would be, leaned against a wall.

I had also thought of no background (just the natural background wherever it may be).

I'm leaning more now toward a $100 background stand setup and a set of red velvetine curtains hung from it.

Any ideas/suggestions/comments?
