I have the following Canon lenses:
24-70L 2.8
70-200 2.8 IS
50 1.8
And assorted brands in the following:
Sigma 24-70 2.8
Sigma 70-200 2.8
Tokina 12-24 4-5.6
And I think there's one more in there, but can't remember.
I'm really thinking of getting the Canon 17-55 2.8 (especially with the sale over at B&H). Good choice, do you think? My husband and I share a kit (we have 4 bodies, just need to get some more lenses).
I'm also thinking of picking up another prime or 2, but I have found that, so far, I'm not much on using my prime.
Any thoughts or advice?

I've heard really good things about this lens. One of my acquaintences bought it for his camera, and I got to borrow it for little bit...wow!
The only thing to keep in mind is that this is an EF-S lens, and will not work on a full frame camera. Otherwise, this would be a great lens, wide enough for large groups, f/2.8 and IS to boot.

pretty balanced. i am looking at the 85 mm prime. also, a 135 mm prime would be nice. as far as the EF-S lens, i would not worry too much since you will always have a backup that is not full frame even in the best of circumstances.

I'm a huge fan of what I consider the 3+3 combo or the 3+3L combo....
3+3
Canon 16-35 f/2.8 L II
Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L
Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS L
Canon 28 f/1.8
Canon 50 f/1.4
Canon 85 f/1.8
or
3+3L
Canon 16-35 f/2.8 L II
Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L
Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS L
Canon 24 f/1.4
Canon 50 f/1.2 L
Canon 85 f/1.2 L II
So what ever ones you don't have, I recommend getting them. I love the versatility either kit offers. What I've noticed, is that the non-L primes match the L zooms optically as far as contrast and sharpness go. They are a little sharper and contrastier, but not a whole lot. The L primes are wonderful. Very sharp, contrasty and resistant to flare.
My 2 cents.
Good luck with the decision.

+1 to Dustin
I use:
17-55 2.8 IS
70-200 2.8 IS
28 1.8
50 1.4
85 1.8
Right now i average over 50% of my shots on primes. Some weddings that's closer to 90%, if i have space to work. My one warning is if you go the poor man's prime route like me, NEVER touch an L prime. I have made the mistake of testing other people's 24L, 35L, and 85L, and well now i have the L prime itch. Well that and the 5D itch to go with those L primes. Damn you nice canon users that share lenses, it's like giving that first taste of crack.......

Do you need more speed at the wide or telephoto end?
If wide, can do 16-35 2.8L II or the 17-55 2.8 IS.
If telephoto, you can go for the 135 2.0L
the 17-40 4L is another option if you don't need 2.8 at the wide end.

17-55 f2.8 IS is an excellent len. Super sharp. I actually replaced and sold my 24-70.
