Okay, my SB 800 eats up some batteries. I recently purchased a set of rechargables that help some, but receptions are crazy, I can go through a dozen AA batteries! Is there a suitable external battery pack alternative out there? What do you guys do about this?

I like the Tinycycler made by Lumedyne. You would get through any wedding with one of theseand the recycle would be real fast.

I have a lumadyne and I love the thing. It was a little expensive, but it's a little workhorse. Small enough to fit in your pocket. A word of caution: I melted an SB800 with that battery...

I use the Quantum Turbo SC Slim with my SB-800s and never had a problem with it. You can probably shoot 2 weddings with one charge. This new model is very compact and light and you cannot even feel it on your side.

1++ on the Quantum Turbo SC.

Great value!

+1 for the SD-8A...when I shot Nikon I used it all the time both with and without the 5th AA on the flash and never had to change batteries throughout a wedding. I loved it!

I just bought a Quantum Turbo 2x2. I can shoot an entire wedding on one charge using an SB-800. Also the Turbo permits rapid fire shooting. So much power that repeated machine gun shooting can burn up the speedlight.

Are you using the 5th AA? I use a really old bunch of 2500MaH rechargeable's that work great. The thing about rechargeable's is they do not hold a charge for long, but can stand up under heavy usage. Charge them the night before the wedding and they go with maybe one change.

We use the 5th AA & rechargeables too. I think it depends on what camera you're using too. Paul shoots the D2X & I shoot the D200 and mine always zonk out way faster.

The camera model doesn't have anything to do with flash output. Your flash/camera exposure settings alone determine that. I'd suggest new NiMH AA's. There are 2900 MaH out there now. I think mine are needing replacement as they don't seem to last like they did.

I recommend Sanyo's Eneloop batteries which have great remaining capacity and can be stored in your camera bag over months:
