I must say that I love foofing and have decided not to use the Fong Dong again! I am posting some pics that have not been edited! I only added a stop to lighten one of the photos. I personally like the shadows foofing allows you to get. I love the 580 EX flash and can make light come from various directions in order to achieve wonderful shadows. Shadows bring the photographs to life and make the subject look 3d!!!!! Here are some examples feom last nights wedding.

I shot these with a Mark IIn but can achieve the same lighting effects with the 20D. Mostly at 2.8, 1/40 Manual Mode 6 - 8 feet away in the standard JPG mode for faster editing and posting production.
With the flash I shot North but bouncing flash off West wall/Ceiling or South wall/Ceiling or like the first photo off the East Wall/Ceiling.

I prefer foofing over any difusser! How about you guys and gals?

Yea! Great shots! smile.gif For a bit stronger and more directional light "Foofing" is great and Chris and I were talking about it this weekend! D. Reggie is so classic with his coined terms! smile.gif I think the Fong Dong is perfect for creating a nice soft light and to get a certain look it's a nice tool.

is your flash in auto or manual? I to try for more of a 3d look, however it is with the use of off camera lights in addition to a 550 with omnibounce on camera......getting the look that you have posted is excellent and has a nice soft look. do you have any other suggestions to acheive what you have?

The flash is in Automatic mode. Right out of the box! The camera at the reception is at 2.8 and I adjust the shutter as needed depending on the ambient light. The trick is to upgrade your flash to the 580EX. You don't have to do that now, but it will help. The 550 has two buttons one to swivel and one to tilt. My 580 has one I believe. Funny I can't remember, plus the rotating capabilities are easier. The bottom line is that its easy to manuever around. It also has the pop out white card hidden inside the flash. I use the white card with the flash pointing straight up. It spreads the light straight forward. Like a lightsphere, but stronger. So you can be further away from your subjects which is cool. But you will notice that your 550 rotates. Try grabbing a subject in a low lighting area and bounce your flash off the ceiling/wall. Your flash will most likely be tilted at a forty five degree fashion. In large ballrooms you can bounce it behind you, to your left, or right feet and have it come back and light your subject. My flash is mainly at a forty five degree angle pointed in all kinda directions just never toward the subject. Foofing takes practice thats all 2 weddings and you'll nail it.

Slightly off topic, but how do you like the Mark IIn?

This may be my next camera if I can land a few more wedding gigs soon smile.gif

Currenly am shooting with the 20D w/10D backup. But I'm thinking I'd like to move to either the MarkII or MarkIIn for my next primary camera.

Anyway,
Nice Shots.....

I absolutely love the photographs the Mark II N gives me. Especially the Automatic Focusing. The film look is no lie. Spend the money and you won't regret it. DPP alows you to change Style Modes which is cool.

There are some cons: I like the 20D's joystick. I have the focus point custom functioned to the joystick. The Mark II N doesn't have the joystick and I have the bad habit of scrolling the wheel and accidentely changing the exposure compensastion while I am trying to change the Focus Point but forgetting to hit the magnifying glass button. Any of you Mark II verterans have any suggestions?

You will be totally pleased with purchasing the Mark II N, it makes my 20D look like a girly man!

I'm foofing more after hearing Reggie talk at Partnercon...but I still really like the LSII...especially helpful when you're in the middle of a dance floor with high ceilings...or if the room has lots of mirrors on the walls (dang Holiday Inns...trying to make their ballrooms look bigger)...in this case the foofing is not as easy (for me) as using the LS.

Foofing is hard when you're outside. smile.gif

But yes....I agree in general, I like the foofing look a bit better, but I just ordered a LSPJ2 from Fong. We'll see how it works out!

I can foof from far distances you just have to trust your camera. Shooting at 15 - 60 of a second is no prob. The ceiling can be 30 feet high and 30 feet away you still can foof! Hey foofing in the Holday Inn is cool!!!!!! Try it!

You are a foof master! I like shadows! That's why bounce flash is my favorite. Foofing takes practice but gives you a completely different look than the LSPJ, once you've mastered it your customers will see the difference between you and your competitors.
