Full Version: working with shadows - are any of these "good"?

Did a wedding the other day, and thought I'd try to get some of the shadows created by the harsh sun and maybe make an interesting shot. I don't know if I really achieved what I was after, so I'll let you all decide if any of these are any good.

I think this one could have been the best had there been more separation in the shadows.

I'm liking this one right now but still needs some tinkering (I left it a bit dark, so I could lighten it but burn the shadows on the ground).

In this one I like that there's only distinct shadow, but does is it interesting enough or just a shot of a shadow on the ground?

Anyway, I'd be interested to hear what other people think since I'm not necessarily hooked on any of them right now.

Not to sound harsh but there's not really much to the shadows here. They kind of just look like blobs. I think for the shadow concept to work you need the shadows doing something like you would a subject. They need to say something about the person making them or the scene and these just don't. The photos have good tone and contrast, there's just not much else to the shadows I think.

Good idea though, keep trying it and see if you can find something else that works!

Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. I think you pinpointed what I was feeling about them, with the lack of any sort of definition with the shadows. Like, I know that they were walking toward the ceremony in this series, but no one else would just by looking at them.

At least it's something I can keep in my mind for a future event!

+1 on J Scotts reply. Here's my favorite shadow shot (from a wedding last year)

That's a great shot Bill!

I was definitely just trying to force something that wasn't really there to begin with. If I had directed them I might have gotten something worthwhile, but I try to be as PJ as possible and not do any sort of staging outside of formals.

Thanks smile.gif

That wasn't staged btw, it was between the car and the reception hall and taken 'on the run' (I was jogging backward at the time). ;-)

The idea is awesome, but it has to be executed just right! Just like in this shot by the Mighty Shane (I hope he doesn't mind)

Hey Phil, I think you're getting some great advice here... The shadow in my opinion should tell the rest of the story.

Phil P
yeah, that's what I was hoping to get but wasn't lucky enough to get a good moment it just wasn't meant to be this time around. but it's definitely a good learning experience.

A good shadow image is clearly defined. It doesn't work so well at the time of day you were attempting to use.
