hello everyone,
i searched to see if there was a previous post on this but had no luck.
as many of you i want the new nikon d3. i was wondering if i should spend the $6099 CAD price and buy it or just lease it for $213 p/month on a 36 month term.
i know that sometimes its smarter to lease things that depreciate and if you lease your equipment you get better tax beneifits.
what do you do??

Talk to your accountant about what has the greatest tax advantages.
Generally speaking you should lease when things depreciate rapidly (assuming the lease payment isn't higher than a financed purchase payment...which, in this case it looks like it is or it's darn near it) -- as long as you are not responsible for negative equity at disposal of the asset.
FWIW -- I would never lease camera equipment.

I lease my Canon 5d and 24-70mm L series lens. I get to write off 100% of the lease with no depreciation. I also lease my computer for the same reason.

Well...as much as I hate the thought of paying for my equipment for the next three years...I'm able to use the equipment now, which I wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise. Another great advantage to leasing.
Good luck. Let us know what you do.

Jen, do you lease your computer through Vistek as well? I have been looking to lease a Mac Book Pro and Apple's leasing programs seems mighty tempting...

No...actually Trevor, I have a computer guy here in Milton that set me up with a separate leasing company. (I have a pc...gasp, oh no)
I can get you the leasing companies info, if you should need it.

Canon Finance Australia offers: purchase of assets / rent / lease for canon equipment. Considering it for a body and putting the $$ Id spend on a body into glass - seems to be a longer term investment!
Does Canon USA do anything similar?
If the lifespan of DSLR's is say 2-3 years (depending how hard you flog them) then this seems to be a good option (leasing)
