Full Version: what software do you use for DVD slideshows?

I am pretty frustrated right now because I have never found a great program make good slideshows for a DVD. I've tried iView Media Pro, iPhoto, iMovie, Keynote, Final Cut Pro, Flash, and a bunch of others as well.

My problem is that it's either way too simple (no moving or zooming images and limited export options) or it's way too complicated (too time consuming and hard to figure out).

What do you use to make slideshows for a DVD (not web!) and what things you like and dislike about it?

Any info is really really appreciated! Thanks!

Dude I am kinda confused huh.gif if you cant do a slideshow from Final Cut PRO. I am thinking about holding siminars on how to do a photo montage within Final Cut Pro. I can do a 80 picture slideshow within Final Cut in about 2 hours. It includes animations from digitaljuice.com text within Livetype, movement with photographs, music and cross dissolves and page peels. I have done literally 100's since I have been in business.

What I like about it is that I have full reign and the creativity is endless with the photographs or the music. It actually looks and feels like a movie. After I am done I MPG2 the project and off to DVD!!!

Its really simply! After you know the secrets!

Blaine,

I've used ProShow Gold for awhile now, it will zoom, lay any music you would like, fade the audio in/out tie it in with another audio and all the other stuff you might like, they do have a demo of it at http://www.photodex.com/ it will also create a show for the web, DVD or CD. One aspect tha I like, I had a client who still uses dial up, couldn't get see the show, dial up too slow. I sent it to her with an expiration of 10 days, if they liked it I could send the ability to unlock it. It also can go by the number of views before it expires. It is not as quick as Showit web, but check out the examples of others have done on their site.

But it won't work on a Macintosh. Also, the uploaded shows won't work on a Mac, either.

Oops, I thought everybody had windows....

I used iPhoto 5 to make a slideshow with custom zooms and music. It worked pretty fast although I didn't care for the compression that it used when sent to iDVD.

Actually, around here it seems most folks use both. Many use Macs for most things and use Windows for other things. Personally, we're exclusively Mac -- can't get everything the darn PC to work at the same time.

Charles,
You should write/record a tutorial on how you make your slideshows in FCP! Sounds like you have it nailed down!

I have been using iPhoto 5 along with iMovie. I have been just barely getting by using them, the lack of control is really frustrating sometimes.
How did you do custom zooms in iPhoto? I have only been able to find the automatic "Ken Burns" zoom.

FWIW, I use the free Photo Story 3 for WinXP..the interface is fairly elegant and user friendly.

We used to use Motion Pictures that comes with Toast Titanium and it worked pretty well...but we might be moving to either letting Pictage do them all or using iPhoto because we've had some good success making fully automated slideshows with iPhoto and as long as we can get them on DVD that's probably a good option.

iPhoto + iDVD works pretty well, though it is limited to the templates and effects Apple has programmed in. If they make a version between the current iDVD and FCP, it would be perfect (not too simplistic, but not too complicated).

I also use iphoto, but used to use Ulead DVD and ProGold Show. i think iphoto is faster ,(it helps when you have many to do) but with ProShow Gold you can do it your way.

I don't see any one using imovie. I use imovie HD and have had great results. I offer a DVD with up to 100 images of the clients choice, and any 2 songs of their choice that I purchase on the Apple Music Store.

I can drag a folder of images in and then add a transition to all the images in one move and then customize it. You can do zoom in and outs and I can do it all in less than an hour.

This works for me. It seems like the logical choice for Mac users to me. Any one else use this?
