Full Version: Super dumb question, but here goes!

I have a brand new 70-200 IS that I absolutely love. But, I don't like the tripod ring on it. When I put it in my shootsac, I can't get it in quickly, nor get it out quickly with that ring on it. I tried turning the little know, but it won't pull out.

So, how do I get this thing off my lens?

I think there should be a screw at the bottom of it? I know I got mine off the second it came out of the box, and I'm not too mechanical, so it shouldn't be too hard...but I truly don't recall exactly how to do it!

Unscrew the little tightening knob.
And then I believe you need to rotate it the same way you would when putting on a lens hood. I don't have mine in front of me, but I think there are little screws that line up with the grooves in the ring.

Hope that helps.

Unscrew the knob all the way, rotate the ring so the red dots line up and pull it off.
Should come off with no problem.

Thanks guys!

It just slid right off. Don't know why I fought it with for so long last week, but it came right off!

Thanks again!

But... but.... why would you want to remove it?

The tripod ring comes in handy two different ways:

First, you can rest it in the palm of your left hand as you hold the camera. Keep the ring slightly loose so the lens rotates, when you go from Vert to Horizontal. (Remember, your left palm and fingers go UNDER the lens, with the weight of the camera resting on your left palm).

Second, attach a quick release plate to it, and then you can use it on the monopod (assuming you have one with a quickrelease head on it). Monopod comes in handy for photographing in dark churches.

Oh I know what you mean! I have a shootsac and I hate that my 70-200 seems like a misfit to all the other nicely stashed lenses. I have a dilemma with this because I use mine on a tripod so I have to keep it on. arg!

I don't know how you use your tripod with other items, but what if you left the 70-200's tripod ring attached to the tripod?

Funny, I agree with taking it off.

I never use my 70-200 on a tripod (defeats the purpose IMHO to have IS) and to have the mount in the palm of my hand would mean I'd have one funky hold on the lens.

I need quickness, with the collar on, I can't put it in and out of my belt holder quickly. With it off, I'm just fine.

It's all personal preference....

When your in a cave of a church and you can't use flash, the only thing you can do is use a tripod or monopod when the best shutter speeds you can get are 1/6-1/10.

I love my tripod ring, even though I barely use it for mounting.. gives me something to play with when I get bored.
