When you were little what did you dream of being when you grew up?

"little" can mean any age younger than you are now...

No really. I knew I wanted to be a photographer when I was fourteen and I knew I wanted to go to R.I.T. It just took me until I was twenty nine to get there. Being a photographer is really the only thing I ever dreamed of (if you don't count being a girl that is, but that was less likely to happen)

In nursery school, a fireman. That was probably the last time I had any idea what I wanted to do with my life until about 3 years ago. Now I want to be what I'm doing -- I just wish I could make it work better.

I wanted to be a teacher for years and years. Then in college I wanted to become a speech therapist. I couldn't stand the thought of staying in school for either one. So after college I taught preschool for three years, kind of like regular teaching. I went back to graduate school so that I could get my masters and teach, did great academically, but hated the teaching part of it and quit after two quarters. Then I finally got to do the one thing that had truly been my lifelong goal, be a mom! I love being a mom, it is the best job ever. I enjoy helping with our photography studio, but my heart is really with my kids.

I should have worked my college summers in one of the national parks and I wonder how my life would have been changed had I done that. Every time I visit a national park now and see the college kids who get to work (and play) in the parks during their summers, I'm jealous.

When I was about 3 years old, my mom asked me what I wanted to be and I told her I wanted to be a girl. Thank God I still don't feel that way. I also wanted to be a painter, architect and youth pastor at various times in my life. Now I am very content just being "photographer Dave" as many of my close friends call me. Of course, if God has something else in store....that could change as well. Aint life grand?

When I was a kid, I was a ninja. My cousins and I would dress up all in black, got our wooden swords, black shoes, and we'd go to the local high school (we were about 12 years old) at night and sneak around all the buildings, rooftops, and see how close we could get to the custodian without being detected. We got like just a few feet from him while he was sweeping the floors, right above his head.

I used to want to be a ninja, too. Growing up in Japan made it even more fun. There was this show on TV and my brother and I would run around the house going "eee, eee" because that's what they did on the show.
Also things like dribbling poison down a string into someone's mouth while they slept -- hanging from the rafters of the house. OK, we didn't really do that part, but I remember that happening in almost every episode.

This is one of the coolest threads I've read in a while. Thanks for getting it started DJ.
I wanted to be my Dad. I saw the big house, the cool family vacations, the ski boat, etc. That meant I was gonna be a surgeon or a CEO until I realized I measured his success by the wrong things. I still want to be my Dad, but this time because he has a super tight family, he makes the ethical choices, he's a leader that inspires others, etc.

dancer, cosmotologist, lawyer, interior decorator, architect, teacher, my mom, beautiful, wife and mother, actress, tiffany...
i never thought i would be a photographer... or a meter maid, or work in construction, or at a church. one thing i've learned is that my plans are nice, but not always where i need to be. and the journey i've been on is infinitely better than anyone i could have imagined. that doesn't mean things i want won't be a part of the plan God has for me, but it will always come in His timing, not mine. it's still nice to have things to daydream about, though...

I wanted to be a Dolphin trainer. I did get a job while I was at Brooks at Marineland for their PR department and worked with the dolphin trainers all the time. They hired me to swim with the dolphins for 20 hours a week while they did some remodeling just to play with them so they did not get lonely. That was a dream come true. Then I led photo trips to Malcolm Island to photograph Orca Whales in the wild then moved to Maui. Now it is Humpback whales and Spinner dolphins. Here is last week on our boat.
http://hawaiianimages.biz/XangaStuff/0905Dolphins.movI took this with my Fuji F10 camera. The new point and shoot with no delay and same technology as the S3. It shoots great pictures and does video with sound and it so much fun.
I love the saying "True success is wanting what you already have" That is my life now. God is soooo good.

Ok, besides that...
I had the desire to be a basketball player, a pilot, a sound engineer (the guy who mixes sound at concerts......I actually ALMOST did this...that's a long story for another time).
When I was in college I wanted to be a traveling songwriter. (hence the "musicman.") I'm too busy with photography now to do much music and do anything with my music degree. Often people who knew me in college or followed my music (a VERY small group of people!) ask me what I'm doing with music nowadays. My response? I tell them I listen to iTunes when I get the chance.

I wanted to live on top of a hill and be a wife and mother. I wanted a little girl first then a little boy.
I wanted to have horses and all kinds of other critters.
In my spare time I always dreamed of being a police officer so I could save people like they did on Adam Twelve.
I always wanted to own a zoo also.

Hey Boomer,
I'm talking the real original Batman, and the Apollo program. Space travel was a really Big thing back then. Guess I'm giving away what a fossil I really am though. Lets just say I grew up with JFK jr. and Michael Jackson.
Oh...one more thing, Tarzan was B&W repeats with Johnny Weissmuller paired with the beautiful Maureen O'Sullivan every Sunday afternoon (fond memories). This Tarzan and Jane remain one of the classic Hollywood film couples of all time. The MGM Tarzan movies made Tarzan books and comics more popular than ever. Everyone was happy ~ except the Hollywood censors. It seemed that Tarzan and Jane's jungle outfits were a bit too, well, revealing. As the series progressed both Tarzan and Jane would show less and less skin.
I took that from the Tarzan site...thought you might find it interesting.

I always dreamed of going to art school- a private art college where art wasn't some forgotten section of the university. I was always drawing on the back-sides of print-outs with tear-off punch-holes on the sides that dad brought home from McDonnell Douglas.
The funny thing was that once I accomplished THAT dream, I hadn't dreamed any higher, so I doggie paddled for a couple of years wondering what God wanted me to do.

A gymnast, and an art teacher all the way through high school.
The closest I got was to work IN the school district, (that's my day job)and my art is my photography.....

and my daughter is a competitive gymnast! Funny how life turns out huh?
