Oh....so many things. For a very long time I wanted to be a marine biologist. But, the first time I went scuba diving and saw a shark I changed my mind......so then it was interior design, then fashion design, then cosmotology, then wedding coordinator. And, for now...what else? A photographer. It would be nice if this one would come true. I'm almost out of options...lol

When I was younger, I wanted to be everything...from the ice cream woman to the president of the United States, and I still don't know what I want to be, there's just too much out there!

Somewhere I have a book called "My Book About Me", I filled it out when I was about five. In it, I said that when I grew up, I wanted to be either a bartender or a dog trainer.

Thanks everyone for helping me to remember all the things I wanted to be but forgot about because it was so long ago, inventor (still do), ninja, astronaut, Batman, Tarzan, pilot, lawyer, etc.
Great Thread!

I wanted to be a vet....we used to practice on my dog when we were little, and pretend like we were operating on him by taking fleas from his fur and drowning them in the sink! .....ewwwww!

It's amazing how some of the similarities are the same. I've always wanted to be a mom too!

No.
But most of the things I wanted to be - I REALLY wanted to be them so I took classes for a number of them. Yeah - I was in school for a long time. blink.gif
Through it all, I always had a camera with me. I knew I wanted to be a little different from the 9-5 I grew up knowing, not have a boss, and have some sort of image-making, story-telling aspect to my life. Here are some of the main things I wanted to be professionally:

-Children's book author/artist
-Lawyer
-Race car driver (still do)
-Architect
-Vet
-Computer drafter
-Animator
-Behind-the-scenes documentarian for feature films (still do)
-Anesthesiologist
-Story book artist
-Photo Journalist for Road & Track (still do)
-Graphic designer
-Videographer (am doing)
-Special effects director
-Inventor (definitely still have this dream)
-Interior designer
-National Geographic photographer (still do)
-Wedding and event photographer (working on that one)

It's cool to see where God has lead us - and patiently see where He's got us going.
-Eddie ph34r.gif

(Yeah, Ninja crawled in there briefly for me too)

-Oh, and how could I forget - movie trailer editor and advertising cinematographer/editor (still do)

A photographer... But I became a mortgage lender (yuck). I think of all the time I wasted sitting behind a desk. Now Im living my dream! Although, my previous career has made me very grateful for my career as a photographer. I am truly blessed to be able to do what I love for a living. Sadly, most people cant say that. Now I follow my instincts when it comes to my dreams camera.gif

I was well on my way to being the next star free safety for the New York Giants. Then when I got to college the other players were a lot bigger than high school, and it hurt MUCH more. So I figured I better find a way to get on the football field after college. That lead me to photography. If you have a nice camera and lens you can get on the sidelines of just about any football game.

My dream when I was little was to be a waitress. My aunt was one in college and I wanted to be just like her!

My aunt ended up becoming a Vet and marrying a Vet. That was my dream until I was about 15.

Because of her, I also wanted to be a sorority girl (been there) and a soccer stud (done that).

Age 15-25, I just wanted to be happy.

I wanted to be a ballerina. That didn't quite work out!

I always wanted to be a writer. When I was in college, my heart started going toward photography... then the writing thing took off as a career. Now photography has taken over... how crazy is my life?

I wanted to be a Dolphin trainer. I did get a job while I was at Brooks at Marineland for their PR department and worked with the dolphin trainers all the time. They hired me to swim with the dolphins for 20 hours a week while they did some remodeling just to play with them so they did not get lonely. That was a dream come true. Then I led photo trips to Malcolm Island to photograph Orca Whales in the wild then moved to Maui. Now it is Humpback whales and Spinner dolphins. Here is last week on our boat.

I am so envious! I spent my whole childhood dreaming about being a dolphin trainer and you actually became one!! That is soooooooooooo cool!

I live in Vermont now, so I don't think that my childhood dream is a reality; however, my new dream is to swim with dolphins, so I will make that dream come true some day soon, I hope!

oh yea... a ballerina too.

That didn't pan out. I walk funny though now because of it.

No way! me too!

Ok maybe not. But I used to walk around on my tippy toes as a kid. It made me taller. Asian Genes didn't work in my favor. wink.gif

I used to want to be a part-time police officer / part-time fire fighter / part-time air force pilot / part-time doctor all at once.

Then coming out of high school I wanted to just be a doctor. Then after first year university and taking a look at my grades I realized I probably could no longer be a doctor. biggrin.gif

Oh, man, there are so many things I wanted to be when I was a kid, but more than anything I wanted to play Major League Baseball. When I was in High School, I really settled into my position as a catcher and probably (at one point) had a chance to do something with it... That is, until a major thumb injury put my catching career to rest.

I still played ball after that (in just about every other position on the diamond) but I never had that same passion and flare for it after not being able to play catcher. It just wasn't the same.

What can you do, right? I am, nevertheless, happy as hell now and, in a way, I'm thrilled that I never got to purse that MLB dream. Life would probably so much different.

Plus, really, isn't making photos the best thing anyone could ever do? It's just so much friggen fun! Rock on, people...

I wanted to be a singer...ended up with a Masters Degree in Opera. While in school I studied photography as well as music (film.....when dinasaurs roamed the earth! Heehee) and decided that SOMEDAY I would do something with it...well...here I am. I love it!

I wanted to be a fighter pilot in the air force. Really. I was talking to a recruiter and then I met my husband. Oops.

When I was really little, I told my mom I was going to be a lawyer by day and a jazz lounge singer by night. When I was in late elementary school, I decided I was going to be an artist or an architect. When I was in high school, I really wanted to become a stage actress on broadway. When I started college, I wanted to be an elementary teacher, but I found my way into marketing. I ended up becoming a great marketer and business manager, which I dropped cold to reconnect to music and become a music teacher. Once I felt like I had a feeling for teaching music, I left because I fell in love with wedding photography. So far, this is the first job I've had that has challenged nearly every part of my mind and body. Who knows what I'll do next... but I know that if I can dream it and want it badly enough, I'll just do it.

No matter where my life leads me... music and photography will always be part of who I am and what I do.... they've never let me down and they've always made me happy....

I always figured I'd write a book.

But I've since come to learn that what I am really is a storyteller. I move through life finding different ways to do that, and different stories to tell.

I wonder what's next. A new story, or a new method? Hmm.

When I was very young: geologist. No idea why. Rocks are boring.

When I was less young: pilot. I still want to do this for fun one day.

Now: IT + part-time photography.

Next: Full-time photography and/or politics.

When you were little what did you dream of being when you grew up?

"little" can mean any age younger than you are now...

i've dreamt of being a F1 racing mechnic for Honda Racing in Japan. but then realized later one that you need to be a brainny kinda person whom is also a whiz at math, which i'm not.

thus... my recent dream besides winning the mega million lottery.. is to be a wedding photog. at least i think that is more realistic... maybe?

You, me and a bajillion other kids from the 70's!

When I was 6, I got Gene Simmons' solo album. From that point on, I wanted to be a rock star.

Well, it didn't work out happy.gif but I do play in the P&W band at church where I still get to crank my Les Paul, so it's all good! And, I don't smell like smoke and beer when I'm done playing (did the bar band thing prior).

I wanted to be a game warden, but once I found out that it's the most dangerous law enforcement department in the US I changed my mind.
Sarah Antonino
First I wanted to be Grizzly Adams (or at least the girl version)

Then I wanted to be an artist or a writer.

Then I wanted to be a Wildlife Biologist.

And THEN I went to school for biology and chemistry.

And THEN I had 4 kids.

Now I am a photographer. And I watch a lot of CSI.

LOL.
Zoic
I wanted to be John & Roy from Emergency.

Then a Camp Director.

Then a Photographer.

Amazing how these things come around...
I'm a trained fire fighter working in 2 volunteer fire departments, I've been a camp director since 1994 and now I working to transition into photography full-time.
Pretty exciting around here! (and I try not to take any of it for granted). Must work even harder on that last one.

I wanted to be an airline pilot all through grade school. I'd draw small airplanes on every page of every textbook in such a manner that if you flipped the pages, the planes would take off and land - with gear retraction and all. 20/400 eyesight killed that dream (but I do have my private license).

Then I wanted to be an electrical engineer. I would design the biggest coolest stereos you ever saw on graph paper with every knob and button imaginable - including 8 Track, reel-to-reel AND cassette tape recorders smile.gif.

Then computers were invented. I'd spend hours and hours programming my friend's TRS-80. That's still what I do today - just with faster computers and more pressure.

I was always into art - mostly watercolors and acrylics - so photography was just a natural extension.

I always wanted to be an artist with my very own gallery where I could stand around drinking coffee all day, selling my paintings. After enough coffee I could have thrown buckets of paint at canvas in my studio and kicked things over like a cracked out rock star. That would have been loads of fun.

Too bad I never learned how to paint.

I love this post....

I wanted to be a vet, but then I had to put my first pet to sleep and that went out the window. Then I went to Sea World and I decided I wanted to work with animals there, dolphin trainer, feed the seals and give the presentations to the crowd, that kind of thing. I actually decided it right then! I went up to a trainer after a show and asked her a billion questions and she told me the first thing I needed to do was get a degree in biology.
So right up until April of my senior year of high school, I was going to school for biology! Then I realized what I really wanted to do was be taking pictures of all of it! So I changed my mind, applied to a photo program and was the last one to make it off the waiting list before school started. I went to orientation not even knowing if I'd get to go! I met my husband there and now we're in the town I moved to for school. I love how things work out!

I wanted to be a doctor, and I actually made it to the doorway of med school, but found that I didn't LOVE medicine the way I thought I did. So here I am with my first love of creating beauty from my surroundings....who knew?!

I remember over time wanting to be a lawyer, an airline stewardess and various other things, but the other day I was going through my "School Memories" book that my mom made for me, and each and every year I wrote down that I wanted to be a mom. I always knew that would be the biggest and most important job I ever had. I'm happy to say that I am the mom to five wonderful kids, and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Marine Biologist...until my dad said not a good idea..."they don't get paid very well." I also wanted to swim with Shamu and fly in the air.

I wanted to be (or thought I was talented enough to be): a vet, a writer, an actress, an olympic gymnast.

Then in high school I wanted to be an athletic trainer. (Totally crazy soccer player) So in college (at Fresno State) I was a Kinesiology major with an emphasis in athletic training. Then I moved to Georgia and spent a semester in school for Kinesiology and thought...what the heck am I doing? I want to be an artist....I wanted to have a store called back to eden, where I made and sold environmentally safe cleaing products and art sculptures...who knew what I was thinking....

I think somewhere in all of the dreamin', I always knew I was an artist...I just had to find the medium that really spoke to me and let me be "myself". Oh, gosh, I sound like an episode of Oprah. Why isn't there a smiley thing for nerdy/dorkin' out/cheeseball?
