An important part about this situation is that we're reading the PM out of context, it seems. Sounds like there is more to the story and knowing what instigated the PM might help us all "understand" (not make it right or excuse the behavior) how to respond.
In no way do I condone the behavior of the PMer, because, as a Christian myself, that is not IN ANYWAY a proper thing to say or think based on what our beliefs teach us (Christians as a whole get taught the base similar things, not talking about any specific religion).
I DO, however, understand why Matt posted the PM (sans authors name) and stand behind him for doing so. If we all sweep hatred (strong word, maybe there is another that's more appropriate but I'm using this one for now) under the rug and pretend like it never happened we'd be doing justice a disservice.
Hatred shouldn't be protected when directed toward the innocent (I'm not saying Matt is innocent, not knowing the full story, but nobody should be allowed to spew hatred even when we think it might be deserving... that's the point where we need to look into ourselves and not allow ill feelings fester and become "just like them", if that fits).
I might've misunderstood Matt's intention, but when I read "Who woulda thought it was because I don't believe the same crap you do," I am reading crap not as a derogatory remark toward Christianity. I see it from a non-Christian who's just been bashed on. Who would want to be Christian if "Christian's" say/believe the things the author wrote?
Matt shouldn't be defending himself but I will
