I was just looking at the differences between Sigma lenses and Canon lenses and wondering if they are any good. It seems that they are a tad cheaper, but I'm a believer in 'you get what you pay for'. What'cha think? Anyone using them?

Don't waste your money on a Sigma. They suck so bad.

The problem with Sigma (and Tamron for that matter) is they make some REALLY GREAT lenses and some SUPER DUPER PRICES eg. (Sigma 30mm 1.8 and the tamron 28-75 f2.8) .. but here is the catch!!!

Their quality control SUCKS!!! for every good lens they ship, you can count on the fact that about 8 will be shipped out with focus problems.. also there is a HUGE gap between the "few" great lenses they make (like the ones i mentioned above) and then the other GARBAGE they have!!!

Save your time and headaches.. Save up your money and get Canon L

24-70 f2.8
70-200 f2.8
16-35 f2.8

Just my opinion...

I started with Sigmas during college as that's all I had money for at the time and they worked fine. BUT, I've gradually replaced with Canon lenses and the difference is VERY SIGNIFICANT in build quality, sharpness and color. Canon's 85mm f/2.x is incredible for tight frame portraiture.

Save up the $$$ if you can, but of course if that leaves you with NO lens and thus NO pictures Sigma is a sufficient third party lens.

Happy shopping! smile.gif

or you can go with some great canon primes

50 f1.4
85 f1.8
135 f/2L
200 f/2.8L

Thanks for all the replies. Like I said, I assumed it was a get what you pay for deal. unsure.gif

I want to save up for the 24-70 f/2.8L as I think it's a great all around lens. Of course I also want to save up for a Canon 5D now too... biggrin.gif

I like the suggestion about the primes. I really don't know why I don't use my 50 f1.4 more often. Everytime I do I'm suprised with how much I love the results! smile.gif

Just an offhand question about those L zooms...are they constant aperature that stays at 2.8 through all focal lengths?
