Full Version: Where are you from?

I thought it would be fun to have a post where everyone told us where they're from. I'm sure it's in people's "intro" post but who reads those after a while? I never know what to answer because I've lived in lots of places and not really "from" any of them in particular.

So I'll start. I was born in Goleta Valley Hospital in the Summer of '69. That's near Santa Barbara. It's one of the Cottage hospitals, now. Lived in Santa Barbara all of five weeks before moving to Japan. Stayed there for 17 years or so, minus sixth grade in Santa Barbara (went to Peabody Elem, for those of you who live in the San Roque area).

No, my parents weren't in the military. They're school teachers. Taught at the American School in Japan for 35 years or so (I wasn't there that long, though). So I pretty much grew up in Japan but in community with English-speaking people. Our life was the school, pretty much.

Went to Westmont in Santa Barbara for four years. Got an Art degree. Studied under Tony Askew, who I've known for my entire life (really). That August (1991) Lynn and I were married. Then we moved to Minnesota in September. Lived in the Minneapolis area for a while (6 years). For those of you who live there, remember what happened on October 31, 1991? wink.gif Worst snowstorm in history for Minneapolis. Our car with California tires didn't like it too much. Our first experience with snow.

So anyway, after living in Minnesota for six years, we decided to move to California to give it another shot. Worked in the San Jose area (and Los Gatos), and proceeded to get laid off several times in the three years we were there. So we moved to San Diego (Oceanside, really). Lived there for three years and decided that it wasn't worth it to live in California.

So, back to the Midwest we went -- this time to Ohio. We've lived here for over four years. The longest we've ever been in the same house. It's weird because I got to thinking that everyone here thinks of us as being Ohioans. I've never thought of us that way, though.

Which brings me back to "where am I from?" I don't know. I suppose I have ties to Santa Barbara (my parents still have their house there and spend their Summers there). So that's what I usually tell people, but I never really lived there for any length of time, except for College. My grandfather was born there, as was my mom. Actually, my Grandfather hired Tony Askew (see above) at one time when he taught Art at Santa Barbara High School.

Sorry for the long and boring post.

So, where are you from?

we're native san diegans . it may be expensive to live here, but to us it's so worth it.

Wow! No kidding? Lynn and I were at Westmont from the Fall of '87 until the Summer of '91 Well, during the school year, anyway. Summers were at my parents' place in hidden valley near Modoc and Veronica Springs. Who knows -- maybe we've met before. thumbsup.gif

-'72, born in Lemoore, CA (Naval Air Station)

-Moved to Mississippi when I was 4 when my dad was getting better at flying A7's in the "reserve air group", and my sister was born

-Back to Lemoore for Kindergarten & elementary school, Dad out on the aircraft carriers for long cruises all over the world. This was back in the "NO GIRLS" days, so I didn't get to go on Tiger Cruises (I'm still a little bitter)

-off to Japan when my dad was on the USS Midway (which is now a museum 20 minutes from my house -- funny to see it all the time). I was in Jr High, on the gymnastics team for my school, and I remember going to ASIJ for meets -- heck, I may have been in the same building with Adam!

-Back to Lemoore for a year. I really don't like that place. It's only redeeming quality is Harris Ranch close by -- the BEST steak on the planet!!!!

-Off to DC for my dad's "suck up to admirals" desk job that all Naval Officers have to go through.

-Moved to San Diego for my senior year of high school. My gymnastics coach in Virginia offered that I could live with them for my senior year so I wouldn't have to move away for my last year of high school. I wanted to go to college in CA, though, and I'd already moved so much, what was one more move, really?

-Graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in San Diego, 1990

-Got an NROTC scholarship and started at Pepperdine University

-Met this cute guy in my CalcIII class. He had taken CalcII at a community college back in Phoenix over the summer and did NOT learn all he needed (lazy teacher, gave everyone A's for showing up). He needed help with CalcIII BIG TIME. I helped wink.gif

-Realized NROTC was a STUPID move. Driving to UCLA 3 days a week for PT & drills & weapons classes & inspections -- blech!!! So I dropped out. Dad was NOT happy. That was a VERY bad time in my life, but I knew I was making the right choice. NOW, my dad brags about me, about how strong & determined I was back then (back when they were threatening to disown me -- seriously)

-Got married to that cute guy in 1993 at Malibu Presbyterian Church
[/NAVY BRAThood]

-Moved to San Jose. hubby was computer science... that's what CS grads do: move to San Jose

-Got priced out of the housing market

-HATED the high-stress world of IPO's and crazy housing prices. We weren't in any jobs that had stock options or anything that would let us benefit from that world, so we high-tailed it out of there and moved to San Diego to be near family (my mom & my sister ... parents were divorced by now, mom stayed in SD).

So, what's my answer?
I have no idea.
Lemoore? NO NO NO NO
EVERYWHERE? possibly

I'll just say San Diego smile.gif

Yes, housing market is crazy nuts here! But I love it out here and it's just a very short plane trip back home or to visit one of my siblings who are spread out - Columbus, Boston, and Florida. I'm an Eastsider - grew up in South Euclid/Lyndhurst. I graduated from Brush in 92.

I was born in New Bedford, MA, which is an hour south of Boston, and until I was 18, the furthest I moved was one street (the house where I was born and the house my parents still own have adjoining backyards). From 18-22, spent my academic years in Waltham, MA, a suburb of Boston at Brandeis University. Then I moved down to Baltimore for grad school @ Johns Hopkins for a year, moved back home to MA to look for work, found work in Kansas City, and I've been here three years. Although I'm from Boston, I do have trouble answering people when they ask me where I'm from, because my family is from Portugal and a lot of times I assume people are inquiring about my nationality because of my last name.

I was born in Argentina in 1972.

This is fun. I was born in 1972 in a very small town in Sweden called Säter. Lived there until I was 18 and moved to Stockholm, Swedens capital city. There I worked with children and went to school.
After a few years there I met this great guy named Joe that was a fullbright Scholar in Sweden for a year. Had a great fun year together. After he left we made plans and I came over here after six months to US to see if our relation ship would still work.
We got married six month later and then moved to Michigan-Kalamazoo for dh to work at Western Michigan University for a year and then we moved to Lansing so he could attend gradschool at MSU for two years.
After this we moved to Louisiana, because Joe got a job at LSU. We have been here since -98 and love it.
Have since been blessed with two great little boys and a booming photography business.
Life is good and our favorite past time is to travel.

Hey all~
I can't remember all of the times and dates like you guys! Whenever I talk about growing up and traveling alot people always ask if my family was in the military.. nope, they were hippies who wanted to travel around alot. And we did. I loved it, embraced it, my brother hated it and became as normal as he possibly could in adulthood.
So, born in Houston TX.. moved to Rockport TX which we still go to every single summer, have family there etc,
moved to San Francisco
moved to Cambridge Massachusetts..
Somerset Mass
Somewhere in upstate NY
a house in Vermont
Denver Colorado
Chicago Illinois
Houston in between all of those. Houston definitely "Home"
Moved to London, lived there for 5 years, photography, rented darkroom space etc
Came home bc I felt guilty that my grandparents were getting older and what if something happened..
got very depressed bc I missed London so much
got a job at Continental in conjunction with freelance photography so that I could frequently see my non blood "family" in England.
Traveled ALOT working for Continental (all over the place)
met this cute Dominican guy who worked with me at continental, fell in love, got married, had two boys named Dominic and Julian
The End or The Beginning of my life now
