I did a lot of 'foofing' during this reception and I loved the results... would love to see some of your images!

The wall to the right where the light bounced off is well over 50 feet away.

Rudy do you keep your shutter speed pretty slow? I love this photograph.

Leann - great photographs.

Foofing isn't just for indoors either...

Interesting - I'm surprised you don't see any "streaking" on the bride and groom. They are moving slightly, so I would think their motion would show up during the "ambient" portion of the exposure.

foofing is fun.
What a term for a big ol' man like Dennis to coin though ay?!
megan80
I can't say I'm a fan of the word "foofing" either. Seems like it's been called bouncing for quite some time, and then I guess Denis just decided to make up a new name for it... why? Is he trying to brand it or something laughing.gif

Luke and I used to flash our 580s at eachother all the time, trying to blind one another. Good times.
Also used to press that strobing model-light button and crack eachtoher up... who knew "flashing" could provide so much innocent fun.

Hey Rodolfo, thanks for posting the video and the explanation, I love the images on this thread! I'm a beginner at Flash photography and just learning the nuts and bolts of it. I have a question that's probably going to show me up for the noob I am but here goes...if the shutter speed on the camera is slow and the aperture wide...what are the settings on the flash?
Sarah Antonino
I used to "foof" by accident, and Matt would laugh uproariously at me. I would just forget to turn the flash when I changed the camera from landscape to portrait and WHAM! Some poor unsuspecting guest would be blinking the circles out of their eyes for an hour. LOL

Now I do it on purpose when I want to. I experiment all the time bouncing the flash off anything that I think might be cool, even the floor. Sometimes it works out, sometimes not so much. I had no idea there was a name for it until MUCH later and I have to agree that it's kind of unnecessary to have a name for it at all other than bouncing flash. If you are not directly pointing your flash at the subject then you are bouncing it. Seems pretty simple to me.

However, I am a BIG fan of stupid-cute words so I can't say it bothers me that people call it foofing. I am not a child, but I have a child-like wonder and excitement with the world that suits me JUST FINE, thanks. smile.gif
