Many photographers have the camera on the for a large amount of time. After using the neckstrap for a while, I have some bad pains on my neck and i don't know what to do about it. Any recommendations on another way of positioning my camera?

Great question! I don't use a neck strap either. I just hold it in my right hand at this point and I wonder at what point I'm going to drop it and cry.
On the joking side, I have wondered if you could take one of those Gorilla tripods and modify it to hold onto my arm and then I could go bionic with the camera!

I have a hand strap on my with the neck strap attached as well. I tend to hold it in my hand most of the day, but then I have the neck strap for when I'm posing someone, or am extra leary of dropping it (like up high overlooking a balcony etc.). I like having both options available.

Yeah I tried holding it with just my hand, but one day it will fall down. I just know it.

I have a neck strap that's a bit longer, and I criss cross it over my body, so the strain isn't on my neck...a bit harder with shorter straps, but I feel like I have a bit more control if I'm moving around than if it's just around my neck.

I don't have a hand strap or neck strap; I just hold it in my hand. I have the battery grip on my 30D which although it makes it heavier, it does make it easier to hold and shoot with. Not having the neck strap seems to give me more flexibiity to move around and get shots at different angles.

I always go strapless.
I've tried neck and hand straps and they mostly seem to get in my way.

I use an Op/Tech neckstrap. It's ammmmazing. It distributes the weight without killing your neck. B&H sells them, I highly, highly recoomend them.

I mix it up a bit. Usually I use my neck strap as a hand strap. I wrap my arm/wrist through it a couple times and it holds fairly well. Between shoots I usually carry it in my right hand as described, or with my left hand I hold near the lens mount on the body. Still secure and no accidental bumping into things like when I use a neck strap.

You must shoot Canon. Nikon's like it rough.

Actually the wife and I are Nikon users, though she treats her cameras much less gently than I do. I wonder why that is?

I have a really cool neck strap that I have never used around my neck. I tend to wrap it around my hand and arm when I shoot. and then and put it on my should when I need to also. I'm trying to envision what I do... I believe it gets wrapped around 3 times... to make it almost like a hand strap.... oh.. I guess just like Matt!

no strap for me unless I am on the back of a scooter.
by the end of the night my left thumb starts to get stressed and I can feel the tendons in my had pop. ouch. but I hate the cumbersome strap. If nikon had a hand strap that I could use with a vertical grip I would consider it.

I just checked it's Kalt brand

I haven't gotten a vertical grip yet

But I don't see why it wouldn't work.
I got it at my local camera shop. maybe try your local shop and you can see how whatever they carry works and feels

Now that I have two cameras to shoot with (lovin' it, although Gerald and I share the second), I wear one around my neck and wrap the neck strap of my other one around my right hand. I'm finding that I like it on my hand better, but I tend to develop tendonitis if I hold it that way for an entire day. I wish I had a better solution!

I use a Canon 1D Mark II, with Newton Custom Bracket, 580EX Flash, cord, Joe Demb Flip It, E-1 Handstrap along with an Op/Tech Neck strap.
Never one issue with weight and I'm not a big guy. 6feet 170lbs. I'm a tall thin stick.

I double up 5ds around my neck one with grip and flash... sounds like it might be uncomfortable... but its not too bad, I'm just not comfortable with my babies dangling off my shoulder =( and that really didnt answer your question sorry!

The hand strap is great! It really makes the camera feel "connected" to you. If I'm not mistaken, it will only work (on Canons) with the 1D models or on bodies with a battery grip attached.

I do like a couple others have mentioned and slip my hand through the neck strap. I then wrap my wrist up in the strap about two or three times so it's comfortably tight around my wrist. I can go all day like this, although it means I can't use my right hand for anything else (like my light meter). I just slip it around my neck if I need to meter or do anything else as my left hand is extremely uncoordinated and clumsy.
My hand would ache for a day when I did this with my Olympus E-20, but I find that I have no problems with my Canon 20d. The Oly was thicker, and caused my hand to cramp up.

I tried a Lowepro strap for my camera for awhile but it didn't take long to stretch those O-rings right on out!! So I've been going strapless for awhile now, which I think I like better, but like Joy and some others said.....you start to have thumb/tendonitis problems then......so we just can win, can we?! Lol....I'm thinking of trying another strap...maybe i'll check into one of those Op/Tech straps.....hmmm.....

I had a couple of OP-Tech straps that I liked, the wide neoprene straps spread the pressure out pretty well. They wore out, so I replaced them with LowePro straps which I am liking as well.

i've got a tamrac removable neoprene wide strap that is really comfortable. when the camera is not in use, i usually turn it so the hot shoe "hump" points inward toward my side and i hang the strap over my shoulder with the camera down by my hip. when you turn the top of the camera inward, the lens doesn't stick out and get in the way... plus with a 70-200 f/2.8 you can bend the lens mounts if your camera is bumping up and down like that.
