I have a rather odd question for photography different from Weddings and Portraits...?

I have personally been interested in the ideas and fact of taking photography to the level of posing people or things to create a story or to the level of what we see in movies with the cinema-photography. I know very little about that area, but desire to learn more. I am open to ideas and quicker ways of googling this idea?

So basically I admire the work I see in movies and would love to learn how to hone my own talent with some of that flare, but not just for movies. For instance, I was sitting in Church today and the Pastor was doing the "invitation prayer time"...I looked up and saw an amazing shot, that I literally almost pulled out my camera phone and probably would have if the prayer been longer! The way everyone was positioned it spoke volumes in my mind and almost cried out to me to take the shot...!

Yeah, I got it bad and I want to use this talent while my mind is still young and fresh enough to be beneficial.

(I do a variety of photography assignments now from Weddings to portraits to events).

So, folks, any ideas on where I can use these skills and learn how to do them better?

Thanks!

Hi, Nate. If I am understanding your question (which you might want to re-phrase), you are describing what is called "Illustrative" photography. Ad photographers who specialize in illustrative setups with people pose them within a scene in such a way as to "illustrate" a story or concept.

It's almost like setting up a Norman Rockwell painting. But this is a limited definition of Illustrative photography, as it does encompass much more. But I do believe this is what you are asking about.

Thanks Bruce...!
That definitely helps in my search for finding the right name of what I am trying to discover! I will look more into that area as well!
I found a link through Google search where it describes more of what a Director Of Photography does and that seems to answer some questions as well! The only down part of this link and site is that it is for the UK area...! I would love to find something in the USA North Carolina area! 51.gif
