We dont do a lot of on-camera flash work, esp. with the 5D and hi-ISO. We use Vivitar 285's off camera and I use a Metz 54 in Auto mode on camera. I need another on-camera flash and was thinking about buying a 430EX for Catherine to use on her 20D, something that would be somewhat no-brainer going from flash off to flash on between shots. I was wondering what your experience with this flash was - good? bad? thoughts? tips?
Thanks!

I'll chip in Mike.
I have the 580 and 430. I use the 580 off cam most of the time. However, its really nice having the 430 around for your back, or rim lighting. Never had an issue with the power being slightly less the the 580. IMO, its cool if your using it for fill, or shooting strobe into sunset. I wouldnt necessarily use it to light up a room, but then again with the right modifier...ehh......I used the 480 for months before I got the 580.
Long story, its a no brainier if you have the funds and space.

Nick, thanks for the reply! I found the 430EX for $230 new locally, substantially less than the 580EX and even a used 550, so I thought I better check it out and get some opinions. I am very ignorant when it comes to canon flashes, but I think this thing has different modes for ETTL? What settings do you use most often for on-camera work?

I have the 420ex... which I am going to sell, let me know if you are still looking for one. I don't really use it anymore, just for backup. It is a great little flash that I give my assistants who have no clue how to use one.

Mike,
The only time I ever use TTL is when the flash is actually on the camera, which it never is. 90% of the time its off camera, and in manual mode. The 430EX is kind of the oddball of the group. Its the only in its "class" that has an LCD readout on the back, and full manual. Of course, remember theres no PC conn on the flash, so you'll have to get that Paramount cord..to trigger PW's...or....I am getting ready to do this in the next few days so the cord/adaptor will be one less step in setup.

Hey Mike,
The 20D and 430EX are a great match. I use the 430EX both on camera and off cam. The zoom slider works great when you need alittle wider range and use it when shooting in an umbrella off cam, I get alittle more power @ an 1/8 or even @ 1/64. The High speed syn works awesome on camera too. I highly recommend it with the 20D for Catherine. I actually got another 430EX on my list. Teamed up with a Stofen or a lightsphere, works fantastic.
Go for it !

Heather, thanks for the offer! I will keep that in mind, but was looking for the current model.
Nick, thanks for all the info. This will mainly be an on-camera flash (for now), but its good to know how well it works in off-camera use!
Burt, thanks for the vote of confidence! Sounds like your experience has been great! I think for the money, this might be the best choice.
