Hi,
Trying to find a nice presentable way to package my DVD's for clients.
I hate printing sticker labels - any suggestions?
How do you prepare your dvd's?
Thanks

what about buying those cds or dvds that you can print onto directly? you will need a printer that has the attachment to print on them, but I think most epson and canon printers now have that option. works very nice.
Another option that I am considering moving to is the Lightscribe technology. I just got a new burner for this purpose but have yet to try it out. check out more info here: www.lightscribe.com

I use an Epson R260 Photo Printer. Pretty cheap printer...seems like I paid just over $125 for it, and all I use it for is printing on my DVD's. I have been unable to find printable CD's, but that would be great too. Seems like they would make them, but so far...I haven't been able to find them.
Hope this helps,
Laurie

I print directly on white-faced DVDs/CDs with my Epson R800 printer. I love it!

I have been using Lightscribe for over a year and a half and really like it! I have it on both my desktop and laptop. Only thing I would like to see different would be another color cd to inscribe on besides the gold-ish color. Maybe....silver. That would look more like a b/w image on the disc than the gold-ish/black. Maybe they have them, just not where I buy the blanks.

I also have lightscribe, but have found that a photo printed directly on the DVD in color is really impressive.

Ok- so I have a canon i9900- what would I need in order to print on the CDs with that? Is there an attachment of some sort?

Actually, I'm not aware of a US based Canon printer that is set up to print on CDs. I know there's a link out there somewhere on how to mod certain ones to do so, but my understanding is that there may be some patent issue on why Canon sells them in other countries, but not here. Here's the link:
http://pixma-faq.periastron.com/Instead, I picked up a secondhand Epson R-200 to do mine for a whopping $25 (they're around $100-$150 for whatever the newest version is).....and then found I liked the Epson prints so much better than the Canon!
And Office Depot (at least in this area) carries both the CDs & DVDs in the printable version.

I use a white, simple template that I created and put a favorite black-and-white photo on it with the date and names. I do stick the label on. I think it looks pretty classy just presented in a clear CD jewel case so the image is revealed. Or, it looks good, too, in a higher end leather folder.

+1... wonder why it's not an option already?
I use Lightscribe also because I didn't want to deal with replacing ink for sticker labels or thermal.

Of course if you don't like Reese than I'd say I don't see any similarity.

I absolutely LOVE the Microboards system. We saw this at WPPI in Las Vegas, and immediately fell in love. In addition to burning the DVD & printing a custom design onto the DVD at the same time, it can also be set to run automatically following a queue...a huge time saver if you have a lot of burning projects setup at once.
Here is the link:
http://www.microboards.com/index.php?topic=UniqueThat system is around $2000 just for the printer...a little pricey.
What we did instead was order custom printed DVD's from a company based out of Washington called Diversified Systems Group, Inc. (DSGI). The account manager is Bob Sambrook:
http://www.dsgi.comWe absolutely love their quality...they print on Taiyo Yuden DVD's, and the screen printing is tack sharp. They have graphic designers on staff to assist with the concept/design for your DVD. I would HIGHLY recommend this over the DIY printers (we tried that method and hated it).

New Egg sells Verbatim cd/dvds that you can print on. I haven't used them but from what I've read they are among the best you can buy.

yes it was a little tiny booth- ok you know where Blu domain was? and I think that think tank was right across from them???? well, there was a set of double doors that were close by. IF you went into that room (it was small) there was and album designing program/company from Australia, Laguna Albums (is that even the right name?) well the were right there in that room. It was a pointless booth because he had nothing to hand out and when I asked a question, he basically told me I could get the different colored CDs at most stores????
Of course the location is totally from my "photographic" memory- which I sometimes gets a little messed up in post processing

Ooh, the little room that the WPPI booth was at (handing out the free gift)? I barely whizzed (is that right?) by that room because I didn't realize it was there. What's annoying is that I didn't realize I'd want to meet you until AFTER we were in the same place at the same time LOL

Black Sharpie... It gives it a... "personal" touch... That way when I am a big "rock star photographer" like DJ, People can always sell those DVDs on ebay and pick up a few grand just for the signature alone... -insert "yea RIGHT!" here-
Seriously now... I use Lightscribe...

So you have your design printed in bulk and then you write the couple's name and date in?

For those printing on your Epsons (I have the R260), I highly suggest using the newer Taiyo Yuden WATER SHIELD printable DVD/CDs. These are water resistant glossy discs that are nice and glossy and have an incredible color. Regular printable discs are kinda flat looking. The results are really quite fabulous. To me, they are even nicer looking than professionally printed discs using thermal printing or screen printing. Give'm a shot, you won't be disappointed. My clients regularly compliment the look of the discs.

I Lightscibe my discs with the Bride and Grooms name and date and my logo, package them in a standard black DVD folder with a 5x7 of my favorite photo of them slipped under the plastic on the front and (if applicable) the copywrite release slipped under the plastic on the back. Works great.

Where do you get the dvd folders from?

You got it! The top part of the DVD is a custom design with our studio contact information, our logo, etc.
For the bottom part of the DVD, we had 3 horizontal lines printed on the disc so that we can write the content description on the disc. This works perfectly...professional presentation, and no time required when I am ready to burn a disc for a client.
They will send you design samples to get some ideas!

I print my own because I like adding a custom image to each DVD (also makes it very easy to go through my archives without having to read labels!) The layout is ultra simple - photo on top 2/3, studio info on bottom 1/3.
