woah, I'm in awe! It's like formal portrait photography for the wild. Just a guess-- I bet I wouldn't be able to even lift some of the lenses he uses to capture many of those. thanks for sharing!

I read an article about him a while back & how people refuse to believe his DOF is in-camera (I'll see if I can find it & post what he says) He says that all the shots that drop out of focus in wierd & wonderful ways aren't 'shopped at all & it's done in-camera & he still uses film. I don't know if his prints are darkroom prints or not but whatever they are the tones are sheer perfection.

That's exactly what I said! It's like they've posed for him! It's really odd & magical. I think he says somewhere on the site that he doesn't use long zoom lenses & he gets in very close. Scary!

This shot is one of my favorites...

Can you imagine standing in front of a heard of elephants!? I guess we can by looking at his captures. I wouldn't do that without a one mile zoom w00t.gif . Crazy guy= cool images!

"I get extremely close to these very wild animals, often within a few feet of them. I don't use telephoto lenses. This is because I want to see as much of the sky and landscape as possible--to see the animals within the context of their environment. That way, the photos become as much about the atmosphere of the place as the animals. And being that close to the animals, I get a real sense of intimate connection to them, to the specific animal in front of me. Sometimes a deliberate feeling that they’re almost presenting themselves for a studio portrait."

Wow......

Everything about it is wow....

The first copy of LensWorks magazine I ever bought was purchased for his image on the cover. Blew me away.

I later read that he was working with a either a broken camera or damaged film for one of his first Africa series (I don't remember which, but I think it was funky film), and it produced some interesting and lovely results he ended up loving and effects he wanted to replicate. He's since clammed up about his "secrets" and as far as I know you won't find an article talking about how he does what he does so lyrically.

If you like his work, you might also like Gregory Colbert of Ashes and Snow. Rather surreal, but beautiful, with people added into the mix.

I'd seen links to this site before but had never taken the time to look ... WOW! And WOW again!!! Stunning, beautiful & mesmerizing.

Ashes & Snow reminded me of one of my favorite photographers, Misha Gordin. None of Misha's work is digital & he achieves much of it in the darkroom which is partly what has me in such awe of his work B Simple

I think I read he's using medium format, and he's printing with a piezo printer and specialised inkset (that's how I got to see his work on the web).

His work is really wonderful and inspiring !

No doubt. I think I would have to change my sponge bob underpants if I saw that girraff poke his head in the door!!! What awesome perspectives and pp!
