I'm working on my short-distance focusing with the 50mm f/1.4 on my 5D and Emily sat still just long enough to be my model this morning:

Emily Natural Light 1

Emily Natural Light 2

I'd been questioning the focus on this lens previously, but since I've started using the focus points (rather than focus/recompose) I think the focus is probably just fine and it was poor technique which was causing my problems before.

Thanks to Steven Fox for saving me the inconvenience of sending the lens in to Canon for service!

Thanks! You should see them in color -- they're bright clear blue!

Love the processing and #2 is totally adorable!
By focusing points are you referring to using the small control nob on the back and moving the points around manually?

Thanks!Yeah, I'd found it was faster to focus/recompose than to use those silly little points and the knob on the back of the camera... but when it comes down to getting the focus or not getting it at all, I guess I'll take the time to use the knob & points!

Thanks Steve! Rockin' Avatar you've got there! Thanks for suggesting I try the focus points!

Leann, these are gorgeous. I'm quickly becoming a fan of your work!!

I had the same experience with focusing. The nob is more accurate but I've always found it to be a bit too small thus tricky to get it set to the right focus point quickly. This is one area where Nikon has the advantage of a well designed (larger) dial...

Steve, I may be wrong, but I think there may be a custom function to switch that to the main wheel on the back of the camera. I am yet to do it, but I agree it would make things easier.

Anyone know the function?

That would be great! This has been my only complaint with Canon ergonomics. Unfortunately it's a function I use a lot.
