I've narrowed my photos down to 800. I'm giving the client only 300 physical proofs. But (and this is a FIRST) she's not a computer user, so it doesn't matter if I put them all in my proofing section, because she won't see them.

What I like and what my clients like are two different things. How do I handle this? I don't want her to think I didn't capture something when I did.

Thanks,
Aaron

Invite her over to see them at your place?

Give her a proofing DVD that she can watch on her television?

...those are the first things that come to mind

You could offer a proof book as an option. Last November I second shot for John Andrews and he showed me a proof book he does for all brides (I think). He puts something like 10-12 images per page and gives them a book with all proofs. I asked him to bring one so I could see and they were very nice. You get to design the covers as well, and although the covers are soft covers, the books feel sturdy.

I offer a proof magazine to those who want one for an extra fee. I use Lulu to print it....

My packages include online proofing and a proof book (right now using lulu, but exploring other options)

Love Blurb for proof books!!! You have to design them yourselves, but they are really inexpensive.

The computer option might be my only option -- where I bring them over to her. Problem is, she wants the 4x6s, not the proof magazines. I, personally, only use the magazines with my clients. But this client was pretty clear that she didn't want to look at a 1x1.5" image on a page.

Hmmmm....

I used to print a smaller amount of proofs than I offered online. It only led to confusion. I have moved away from the exorbitant cost of 4x6 proofs and now do proof books. Blurb is a really good way to go. If you make 6-up proof sheets, you can proof twice as many images for half the cost. That means everyone wins. Nowadays everything gets proofed on paper (as a book).

I would give her two options:

1. she pays extra for the additional printed proofs

2. she "upgrades" to a proof book for free.

I make sure I show a sample proof book to my clients and stress to them that there is little difference for making image selections. It is also more portable and images will not become misplaced or stuck on a shelf in a closet to be forgotten in a couple of years. Books go on bookshelves and are revisited again and again.

Agreed.. you can do 6 images to a page instead of 12 and it is not much of a price difference. Unless she has 4x6 proofs in her contract I would do the above.. great advice.

Give her all 800 proofs, get them printed at Sams Club for 16 cents a print..or wait three days for 12 cents a print.

At 16 cents you are looking at $128 (plus tax). Proof books are still far, far cheaper.

upsell the book and everyone wins.
