I need a backup to my MarkIIn and cant justify the 5d right now and would like to wait for it's upgrade. The 30d is what I am looking at and wanted to know what everyone thought of it before I hit send on the order button.
Thanx and much love.

Highly recommended! It's my back-up/2nd body to my 5D. Great IQ and overall performance so far. I usually have my 70-200 on it.

compared to the 5D, it doesn't even come close. but it's a decent back-up.

30D is awesome. With proper exposure, they files you get out of it are fantastic! It's also a nice match as I believe the file resolution is the same as your Mark IIN.
I pair it with a Mark III, and when strapped to your side with the 70-200, 30D makes a great sniper camera with extra reach.
I know I'd be making a lot of enemies saying this, but after trying a 5D out, I returned it because I didn't find the files to be THAT much better than the 30D files. People tout the 5D as a life-changing experience so I was expecting a lot and was disappointed. The Mark III on the other hand did amaze me and I'm happy I chose that instead of the 5D.
So I'm of the opinion that the 30D files are excellent too. I agree, not as good as the 5D, but for double the price, it just wasn't worth it to me. The 5D gives you more forgiveness if you tend to underexpose though.
Thus, what I would do in your situation would be to pick up a used 20D (image quality exactly the same as the 30D), save the cash to get a Mark III soon! yeah baby!!

We shot with 20D's, and after several months of hearing everyone tout the 5D as the greatest thing since sliced bread, jumped in and got one for both of us... It's definitely a great camera, but we can buy about four 30D's for the price of one 5D. And after we've finished processing the image, I don't think that the quality is worth a 400% cost increase. So we ended up selling both of our 5D's and went back to 20/30D's and got some better glass. We have shots in our gallery that were shot with 5D's, 30D's and 20D's... If you need something to convince you that the 30D will work just fine... Why don't you take a look and see if you can guess as to which might have been taken with the oh-so-amazing 5D and which were taken with the 30D or 20D?
