Full Version: Brilliant Presets, Lightroom and JPG?

My husband and I are JPG shooters (although I keep going back and forth on the issue).

Will the Brilliant Lightroom presets look the same on JPG photos as on RAW photos? I know I've seen some presets that look different, so wondering how well this will work for me?

I'm willing to go to RAW shooting, but I am 2 weddings behind on editing and really need to speed up my workflow. Both weddings were shot in JPG, so looking for something that I can use quickly and will just add that bit of ooompf to my photos!

Thanks!

Has no one responded to this, really?

I've used Brilliant presets in LR on both jpeg and raw and I can tell you right now, I wouldn't get them if I was just shooting jpeg. At least for me, they only seem to make the right kind of adjustments on a raw file.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong... but that's what I'd say if you're trying to decide. And, I would also switch to raw (which I just did a few weddings ago). Just a thought. smile.gif

I can't speak to the RAW verses jpeg because I don't shoot raw. I can say that they do add an extra oompf to jpegs.

Thanks for your help guys!

I actually did purchase them and am using them on jpg. They give quite a bit of oomph, so I've been toning them down.

Thanks!

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. The presets built for raw will always be too intense for a JPEG. My advice is to apply it to an image, tone down the exposure (and other minor tweaks) until you get it where you want it, then right-click on the preset and update it with your current settings.

That will work with any preset. On my computer, I saved an entirely different set of my presets to be more sympathetic to the limited range of JPEG.

My ultimate advice would be to shoot raw. smile.gif

I did make them for RAW so they'll probably be a bit too much for JPEGs...if you're considering going RAW I would encourage it.

Any chance those the jpg version will be for-sale (or available to those of us who bought the RAW version)? I didn't realize that your presets for for RAW and I shoot mostly jpg. If I didn't have to go through all of them to tone down a bit, it would be great.

That said, I love the presets and can't wait to play with them more.

I know this is a dumb question...but how do you get these presets on LR? I have clicked and dragged and looked all over, but can't figure it out.

I just imported the presets.

So, once you unzip the file, you can go to your presets and under "user preset" right click and click on "import". Then find your folder and you should be done!

David... I have asked others and no one has really been able to answer this well for me, so maybe you can help. How on earth are you able to shoot RAW at a wedding? Of course I know you have more money then me and charge more so I am sure that helps haha.
Is it a matter of:
1. Carry about 24 1-4gig cards with you
2. Hire an assistant who's major job will be just to take the cards when they are done... load them to the lap top, double save them to external hard drive, double and triple check that the files are good and there, delete the CF cards and re-use?
3. Get down to where you are only shooting 300 shots at a wedding? Which I don't think is the answer as I heard you say you shot 2,000 at that one wedding.

Please advice.
Thanks

P.S. Options 1 and 2..... I don't know if I have the money to do. The extra CF cards are probably much more affordable then hiring the assistant.... but now you are looking at like 50 gigs or more for one wedding to download to the computer? It took me just over an hour to dump 9 gigs of jpegs from the last wedding from camera to computer? I have to be doing something wrong....... help the insane please.

Hey Jeff,

Media is pretty cheap these days and I carry eight 2gig Lexar cards that I bought 3 years ago when they first came out for $450/each (gnarly! - I know) ...now they are $30 or so. Even buying ten 2gig cards shouldn't be out of anyone's budget. It's a cost of doing business these days.

I shoot RAW and sJPEG and just download the small jpegs (takes about 1 minute), sort out my favorites (takes 15 minutes) put special effects on them with Showit Effects (takes between 5 and 10 minutes) and I'm done.

I do the whole gig by myself and have done it at every wedding Since May 2003.

I love that plan. I tried it recently and I can't figure out how to downloard just the sJPEGs.

Can I sort the card before it is downloaded? Sort by 'file type' in the OS or in iView?

Any suggestions?
davidjay
Yup smile.gif Sort by "File Type" or "Size" ... then shift click to select and grab all the small jpegs and you're good to go. Rock on!
