Hey - I remember seeing somewhere a video about Jessica Claire's reception lighting - she uses a small softbox on a pop up stand to get some gorgeous backlighting.
I'm interested in getting a set up similar to hers. Does anyone remember seeing this video also? I searched Cut Frame TV and couldn't find it.
I'd appreciate any advice!
Thanks!

Thanks again!

The redwing quickstand is no longer made. Jessica may try to resurrect something similar in the future now that shes in the mfg. business (she alluded to that in the video and in posts here at OSP). A nice sturdy stand is a welcome thing however.

She uses a softbox. As far I know those get your flash down about 1.5-2 stops.

Wow, Mike I didn't know that. I really like mine for use in the church. Makes it easy to move it around.

Lightweight light stands that fold up nice and small are readily available -- www.strobist.com recommends one but I can't remember what it is. I have a Manfrotto that works great, folds up to 19".

It's not the folding up that I like so much but the release mechanism the redwing stand had. It would automatically expand its legs when you put it down and collapse them when you picked it up. There are sturdier stands out there but I've never used one as easy as that. I'm working on a license for it, and if I can't get that, I'll invent something better!

I just bought a stand like this not long ago. It's named Kwik-stand. It's legs will extend when set down and retract when lifted.
You can get them from
http://www.arlingtoncamera.com or directly from kwik-stands website,
http://www.kwik-stand.com/.
Arlington camera is cheaper though.

Ron, I'm glad you brought up Arlington Camera. I LOVE those guys! I go in there everytime I'm in the Dallas area. Oh, and when the 50 1.2 came out, EVERYONE was backordered. They had one and shipped it out within a day or two, and get this...CHEAPER than B&H. LOVE Arlington Camera!

The Manfrotto stand is so popular that it's in and out of stock. It took me about six weeks to get one, but I love it. It's super light and flod to a little more than a foot.

I love this thing and use it indoors and out.

Hey Eric
From the looks of it - that softbox is a
Photoflex LiteDome XS - which are great - but they are a literal softbox - and go with the softbox set up, and break down time, with rod and the whole deal, just smaller. Which isn't "that" long - but there are more location friendly options.
There is also this little one:
http://alzodigital.com/online_store/alzo_p...sh_soft_box.htm which has the same type of sup[ort structure as those flip open reflectors (and windscreen shields), instead of the rods of a std softbox. It's about $60 for the whole kit ready to mount to your stand of preference. There is also the Lastolite EzyBox Hotshoe (think thats what its called) which is the same concept - but more than double the price of the Alzo digital one... Not sure if its more than double the quality tho....
Cheers, Nathan.

A softbox that size is only going to make a difference for close in headshots.

November 21 2007, 05:06 AM
which size softbox would be more useful...a 28"x28" or a 50"x50"?
ramjpc
November 21 2007, 08:34 AM
Depends on what you are going to use it for. If you want to use it for receptions like Jessica, the smaller one might be better, but I think the 28x28 is still bigger than the one she uses.
Jessica, any further news on your plans for the light stand?

Hey Jessica if you do make something you might consider something that could hold a video light battery back on it, a hook or something. Twin strobe users might want some kind of braket or something secure to add a bracket on the top.

I would imagine that a shoot-through umbrella would accomplish the same thing with less setup time. Jessica, is there a reason you went with the softbox rather than an umbrella?

Off the top of my head, I'd say it has to do with light dispertion the softbox being more focused. Also moving an umbrella can be cumbersome and the weight distribution would be centered moreso with a softbox.
