I know that music licensing has been discussed on here many time before but I recently found this and thought I would share.

BMI has a music license for websites and it's less than $300 per year depending on your website traffic.

You can access there online signup page here or there main site here

I signed up and it only took about 5-10 minutes.

Hope this is useful to someone.

that's great. thanks! after much research, i've struggled to find royalty free music that doesn't sound like royalty free music.

So, how much was it? I went there and I have to create an account to find it out.

I remember reading on the thread about the ASCAP internet license that the license only gives you the right to play your own performances/recordings of the music, not to play tracks from BMI artists' CDs or MP3 recordings.

Is that the same here? Legalese is so hard to figure out.

Great question Ryan, I was wondering too.

Alex - I paid a pro-rated $179 for the remainder of the year. Annual License fee is $299.

Ryan & Mark - I have an Internet License which according to BMI's site;

Internet License

"Your BMI license covers BMI music which is made available on a web site either owned, operated or controlled by the licensee and delivered to end users from the URL(s) which are listed on the license, through either streamed of downloaded files or software. Please remember that this license does not cover the transmission of music made available on a web site not listed under your agreement."

There is also an annual report you have to file to report how many page impressions you have recorded to insure you are still under the allowed page impression listed in your agreement. I believe mine allows me to have up to 700,000 per year. I calculated that based on my current traffic my page impression are less than 200,000 so I should be good for a while.

There is also a link on BMI's website as an example photographer who has a BMI license and his site is playing the Goo Goo Dolls. Website

So while I realize that legal stuff can be confusing from everything I can tell this is legit. and for $299 per year I think it's also affordable.

However if I'm wrong here someone please clue me in:) .

Interesting... I'm seeing some stuff that points in both directions on the site, so I sent an email and if/when I get an answer, I'll post it here.

Well, it is still $300 per year.
