I use Avid Media Composer at my day job, but at home I have Avid
Xpress Pro. Xpress Pro has an extremely powerful interface built on about 15 years of Media Composer releases. Avid actually has something called
FreeDV which is very stripped down, but good if you want to get your feet wet. And it's free! I'm in the city every day, so if you go with Avid I'd be happy to make a house call to help you get started.
Final Cut is certainly sexier and you'll sound cooler if you say you use it, but Avid is solid.
