Lately I've been getting a *lot* of "buy my product" (and no, I'm NOT referring to DJ's newsletters which I signed up for when I joined OSP & when I bought Showit), "check out this website", etc... emails from people here who're trying to promote their products.
I don't think it's cool. I didn't sign up for a forum to be spammed by its users and I doubt that's why DJ created the forum. I do read OSP... if you think your product would be so awesome for me because of something I posted on a thread here then post it in the thread, PM me, whatever - but don't add me to your spam list because you've already been lectured 100 times for promoting your business here. It just makes me LESS likely to sign up.

I would recommend to DJ that if someone is "caught" using the OSP member list to send spam, that person should be given a warning and then banned. Nobody signed up for that junk (and I know of at least 3 people who've added me to their lists without my consent - please remove me if you're one)

I wonder if this forum becomes private with a small fee and when I say small something like $5 once subscription will help to stop spammers and users that never participate in OSP discussions.

The spam I'm getting is from active users... I don't think that would help.

Are you very sure it's from people harvesting OSP lists? Seriously - I buy lists of names and email for our seminar mailings and it's *amazing* how many times I recognize names and people from the various forums as I'm processing them.
Just something to be aware of .. if you are a member of any organization or have used your email to register for anything ... it can be purchased. It doesn't have to be an OSP related harvest.

I'm positive they're taking it from OSP... the emails even *mention* OSP.

I don't like SPAM either. I don't think I've received the ones you're talking about. But, depending on how it's done, certain types of solicitation aren't actually SPAM. They might be just people with something to sell emailing you because you might be interested in buying. Tell them you're not, and to stop emailing you. If they continue to do it, it's SPAMMY.
People are VERY touchy about getting things in their email boxes, but no so much in their regular mail. For me, I think it's my worry that if I'm on this person's list, it's only a matter of time before I'm on a bunch of SPAMMER's lists.
What I really don't like: Phone solicitations. Talk about obnoxious.
Also, I don't like blatant and repetitive selling in the forums, either. But it happens here big time.

I don't think I have gotton them either. I would be contacting DJ if I had though. Yea, that's not really what OSP is for. I doubt if they would ever charge a fee to use OSP since that's the whole idea of 'Open Source'. I do understand the logic behind that though.

I hate spammers. But I love telemarketers- it's fun to jack with them. I've learned that if you just say "yes" to every question they ask- they get very irritated. Then ask them what they are wearing- and if it has feathers on it.

i think posting a link to your site or whatever it is your selling in your signature should be good enough.

and if they prefer boxers or briefs... that one really gets them frustrated.

Was that the mgalbums thing?
I didn't read it so I have no idea if it was from an OSPer, but that would be the first time I've gotten something photography related in a while that wasn't from Rangefinder or SPD.

I hate being spammed at my front door because it makes the dog bark like crazy and it's usually when I'm suffering from a migraine (today, actually, arghh).
When friends send me FWD:'s and urban legend emails I've replied to them asking nicely that they discontinue sending me non-personal emails. If they started spamming me I might ship some Spam to them with a note asking them to remove me from their Spam list.

If it could in any way be something related to my business, then I am actually very interested in receiving it. It doesn't mean I always *end up* being interested in the product after all is said and done, but I like to know whats out there. And my inbox is a pretty convenient way for me to find out!
