I am not a Canon shooter, but just curious.

Why did Canon "dumb" down the resolution on this camera from 16.7mp for the Mark II to just over 10mp for the Mark III???

is it that much cheaper?

Actually, I don't think this is the successor to the full-frame Mark II 1Ds. It's meant to follow the Mark IIN which had 8.2 mp and a crop factor like the new Mark III. They really "upped" the resolution from 8 to 10mp.

This is supposed to be the greatest DSLR introduced so far. 10 fps, 6400 iso that's useable!! i'm drooling.

oh, it goes for about $4,500 i believe.

There are actually 2 different Canon 1-serries lines.

There is the standard 1D serries, and there is also a 1Ds serries.

The 1Ds is a "studio" camera, where the 1D is generally considered a photojournalist camera.

The 1Ds serries (1Ds, 1DsMkII (16mp), the future 1DsMkIII) has always had larger sensor with slower performance - perfect for shooting super high detail stuff in a studio environment.

Where the 1D serries (1D, 1DMkII (8mp), 1DMkIII(10mp)) is more for run-and-gun work. It's zippy super fast - the rappid fire is more geared toward action stuff. This is used by most news agencies, Sports Illustrated, and is in my opinion the world's most perfectly suited wedding PJ camera.

Yeah the 1ds markII is the one that you're referring to, and the successor to that will probably come out after the 30d's successor (which is slated to be soon from what i can tell). The MarkIII is a 1d (no s) which is the 1.3x crop factor and is as was noted before upped 2 mp. If you wanted a 1ds you'd be looking at a 7k purchase.

::EDIT::
Dang, beaten to the punch by the awesome Kevin King.

This is all rather confusing to me...LOL

I would LOVE a full-frame camera but the camera designations (names) are just too confusing for an old man. I guess it is "Camera A.D.D." I just kind of skip over all those names without comprehending them. I guess if you are a Canon shooter it is easier to mentally process.

I will probably be dead before Nikon even thinks about this. I may need to save my pocket change for a FF Canon.

As far as i know, nobody ever said: 'Dang I wish I hadn't bought this 5D'....
