I finally found the courage to write and introduce myself. My name is Sabrina. I am 23 years old and live in the South-East side of the island of Puerto Rico. I was born in Manhattan, N.Y, but raised in this beautiful island where most of my family lives.

I am just starting to discover the world of photography. It's my favorite art, although I didn't formally practice it before. My friends tell me that I have potential, but I am kind of afraid to start charging for my work, because I have no kind of formal education in photography. I kinda work instinctively (but I'm starting to read some books). Here in this area of Puerto Rico there are some photographers, but none as professional as you guys. My wish is to be able to be a quality photographer; confident of my work. And well.... I was just hopping to make good friends willing to give me a hand in starting this journey that God has put in my way. I do believe that God has a purpose with all this. I'm currently unemployed and having some economical problems, and for the glory of the Lord a friend is getting married this weekend and wants to pay me to take his wedding pictures. I am really exited about it, but I still have cold feet. unsure.gif

Can you tell me the story of how you started your business? What made you successful? Can you give me advise?

I am really exited to start to meet new friends and learn from you all. Your respond will really be a blessing. 51.gif

Thank you in advance,

Hi, Sabrina, and welcome to OSP!

I have been in photography for 23 years, and I had very little formal education. I once took a semester-long black & white course at a local community college (1984), and attended an Art Institute for one semester before dropping out, but I was already in business at that point and felt the education there was a waste of time and money.

Gaining expertise in photography, like many things, simply requires practice. There is so much you can learn from books, internet, video, and when possible, seminars and workshops. But you just have to be practicing your craft.

Success in business requires persistence. You have to be out there promoting yourself and your work. Always. And don't be afraid to charge for your work. If you are confident in creating decent images, your time and image-making have value.

Sounds like you have a great opportunity with this upcoming event. I hope it goes exceptionally well for you!!

Best wishes!!!

Hey Sabrina! I'm just signing in to introduce myself also (this is my first post, actually. Waving hi!). If you're seriously considering doing your friend's wedding, I'm wondering if there are any local photogs that would be willing to join you. If you're going to charge $$ for it, some extra experience and equipment would be key. I get nervous butterflies just as the second shooter/side-kick... Just my 2¢.
Anyway, best of luck and nice to meet you!

Hi Sabrina - welcome and glad to hear the exciting news about your friend's wedding.

One thing I love about photography is I am always learning. I read a lot of books for technique tips, ideas, creative ideas, business ideas. Check out your library and see what you can learn. This is a great place to ask questions about everything photography/business. The people here are very helpful and smart!

Hi Sabrina

Puerto Rico has awesome photographers. Go into San Juan around the condado make friends with the people in the hotels there and ask them about the photographers that shoot a lot of the weddings there you will get good information and will probably find a mentor.
