I started by posting to do a free engagement shoot on Craigslist here in Miami.
PM me or email me I'm here in Miami, i've never used a second but would love to help you with any questions. It can be frustrating at first but it gets better.

Oh man Ray... you need a positive outlook! The suggestions I have are probably nothing new....
1. Ask all your friends and relatives to do free sessions. Give them referal cards to pass out to all thier firends and relitives. Give them something in return for bringing customers... free prints or something. To get the new customers in give them something too... free session with a free print.

2. To find more customers to start your business... talk to local pastors if you are interested in doing weddings. Let them know that you are willing to do a few weddings for cost to build your portfolio. If they know of a couple who can't afford a photographer.

3. Adds on craigslist.

4. Go to daycares or sports centers and offer to do free portraits or sports actions shots. Post them in a password protected gallery for the parents to buy what they want.

5. Have a "model" search for your advertising. Advertise that you are looking for some models for your samples. Offer to do a "mini" session for free to find that one model that you want to use for some sample work. A lot of parents want their kids to be models. Make sure you do pick one and use them for some sessions for advertising material.

Unfortunately, unless you're blessed with an exceptional website and exceptional photographs right from the get-go, you have to put some time and energy into marketing. And be patient.

I'm in my 4th year of shooting professionally. Things did not happen overnight, and I'm glad that they didn't. I wouldn't have been prepared for them, if they had.

Take the time that you have now to learn. Know your camera, learn photoshop, learn from the people that post here on OSP, learn from the people on other forums.

Get out, and market yourself. And learn.

My $0.02 Canadian. Change accepted. smile.gif
