Full Version: Softbox for 120j

I have a 120j on the way (hasn't arrived yet, should be here tomorrow). I also am getting a 45" umbrella. I would really like to try a softbox and I must admit I did not pay close attention to the softbox setups at One Light (I'm a bad boy). I need to go through my notes (all on audio right now). I know Zack recommends Westcott Apollos. Everyone I have talked to (B&H and a few local shops, I called around) feel that a softbox won't work with an off camera flash because of positioning of the flash, umbrella bracket, etc.... that it won't work. But then they also say that they have never used a 120j so they don't know how it would work out.

I'd like to hear from those with experience actually using a 120j with a softbox before I go ahead and order one. I would only be using this for 1 or 2 subjects. I would also like to be able to use it for full body (verses headshots, etc..)

I have the possibility of doing some shooting in July that I would like to use a One Light setup, so I want a chance to play and try everything out prior to the shoot.

Thank you smile.gif

Softbox's normally have a speed ring.

You need a softbox that says strobe only - Like this one. It shots into the back and reflects off a silver interior the softbox face.

don't you love it when you go to a big box camera store and say "hey do you guys carry ________ (pocket wizards,5 in 1 reflectors, etc)" and they obviously have NO CLUE what you are talking about and they say "What will you be using it for?" LOL

TO TAKE PICTURES YOU IDIOT> sorry, rant over!

Yeah, I actually had the same exact thing happen to me. I was told all softboxs need speed rings.

Westcott Apollos do not require speedrings. They open just like an umbrella and actually go on your umbrella adapter. I ended up ordering a 28" Westcott Apollo "FOR FLASH ONLY" version from B & H this afternoon. smile.gif

My wife will kill me when she sees all the boxes marked "B & H Photo" arriving via a little brown truck! One box came today, then I found something else I wanted, so I placed another order. I think UPS is going to be here at least four times next week!

Yeah, sadly enough, this was the area "Pro Shop" (and no Zack, it was not Ace Photo).

But maybe I should try that! Walk into Ritz and ask the guy (or gal) behind the counter for a 45" umbrella because it might storm!

Neal-

Order the Apollo, they work great. And they are back instock at B&H finally. I picked one up 2 weeks ago, and use it with my sb-25 all the time now. It would work fine with a 120j, as your pictures from the workshop show. Doubtful that anyone at B&H has really played much with the 120j in an apollo, so they just wouldn't understand.

My wife thinks the UPS man is hot...
