As a former resident of the area, I'm sorry lol
I lived in Columbia for a bit after grad school trying to figure out if I'd be working in Baltimore/DC or relocating (I ended up moving back to the Boston area). It's weird that Columbia is supposed to be a nice community, but it has an undercurrent of seediness (I lived in an apartment complext on Little Patuxent, so you got a different mix of socio-economics). I'd go to a gas station down the road and the cashier would be behind bullet proof glass. But by all accounts Columbia is a nice place to live (if I had a single family home there, I'm sure I'd feel the same).
Anyway, that's my little Columbia anecdote

glad you lived to tell about it! i'm off columbia road. it is a change from western nc, but not from nj where i grew up. i have to get used to locking my door again though.
