OpenSourcePhoto > YA wanna FIGHT! > RAW vs. JPEG

i just switched over to RAW because i wanted to see what all the hype was. and i will never shoot jpg again. BUT... my memory cards are slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow! I know they have RAW cards, do i NEED to get one? or are there alternatives.

The cards i use right now will allow me to take 3-4shots and then i have to wait about 2 seconds to take another shot. and then i have to wait about 6 more seconds to do anything else.

Help!

Ok there, slow down a bit. What kind of camera do you have. What kind of cards are you using? Are you using SD(Secure digital) or CF(Compact flash)?

Usually the best cards to get are the Sandisk Extreme III cards. But i'm betting that you're using an XT,XTi,D50,D70(s) and only have a 4 shot buffer when shooting raw. You will however see a dramatic increase in speed but still not up to where you'd really want.

Ok i cheated, you're on photo.net it looks like. And you use an original rebel. Your best bet is to get one of the Extreme III cards from SanDisk. And if you're thinking of selling that rebel i'd be curious as to what you're asking for it.

If you'd like a bigger raw buffer try going for a used/refurb 20d, that should be more what you're looking for.

i figured it was going to be my camera. i currently am using it on a canon rebel. and i have the Sandisk Ultra II, a Lexar 80x and some other Delkin cards. It was never an issue until i started shooting raw. I won't be getting a pro body until Fall so i want to get as fast as i'm able to with the memory cards. I'll be getting the Canon 5D.

thanks!

I will mention the simple facts that there is a Compact and SD card guide on Rob Golbraith's website. I think that's the right spelling, either way he's a big camera guy and Google will point you to the right website either way.

My point being is the miniscul differences in SanDisk Ultra II's and III's are exactly that, miniscul.

I shoot and own 14 CF cards, 12 SanDisk Ultra II's and 2 RiTek Pro Lines.

I shoot RAW mode exclusively, nothing but. The camera will limit you no matter what card you put in right now.

Save your money and buy SanDisk Ultra II's. On a 5D (due to it's larger file size), I'd recommend a couple 4 gig cards.

I personally shoot 2 gig cards right now and will move over to a larger card once I get a couple of 5D's as well.

This opinion is based upon owning and shooting with Original Rebel 300D, Rebel XT, Canon 20D, 30D, 1D Mark II (currently) and even knocked a few frames off my buddies D70.

=o) Good luck. Hope I helped.

I use a combination of the Kingston 133x 4GB cards and Sandisk Ultra II 4GB cards on the 5D. I really love the Kingston ones smile.gif

With the speed of your rebel, the limiting factor is the camera, not the card.

I've been using RiData 150x Pro 4GB Cards (silver ones) for over a year now. They've been amazing so far, no problems at all. Super fast and pretty affordable. I have 10 4GB cards for my 5D.
