Hi Ray,
Zack's a good friend of mine. He's traveling now so I'll endeavor to answer for him. Some of this is my opinion and might vary from what Zack would tell you.
The setup Zack uses is very simple. It is just a light stand, flash, swivel bracket, umbrella, and radio trigger.
The actual brands of things can vary. Zack uses a Sunpak 120J. The problem is that it was discontinued just after he bought it. He used to recommend the Vivitar 285, and I would think he'll go back to suggesting that or something similar.
There are a bunch of umbrella swivel brackets on the market. My favorite is from Photoflex, I think the one Zack uses is by Bogen.
Stands and umbrellas are pretty much interchangeable. Whatever you can get your hands on should work, but I like 13 foot stands because they have a wider base. The larger your umbrella, the softer your light.
The radio trigger is the only expensive part. A set of Pocket Wizards will cost about $350. You can use a sync cord, IR, optical, or cheaper radio slaves if money is tight, but I would either go with a cord or Pocket Wizards. THe in between solutions just don't seem reliable to me.
If you look around he has a link posted where you can buy his suggested equipment that puts money into his education fund. Please use that link if you are buying his list.
I have a Canon 20d. im looking into that Vivtar 285. I have a softbox and Stand. need to get a universal speedring and wireless sync. I am pushing to learn manual shooting alittle more. I want to know am I headed in the right direction with this.
