Full Version: Need Advice!! Downloading Images to Computer
OpenSourcePhoto > Digital Photography > Misc. Photo Question

Ok, I need some education obviously.

I am renting a 5d from LensProToGo and asked if they would be supplying the USB cord to download the images to my computer from the camera. Answer was no, it's bad practice to download to your computer with a USB cord.

I NEVER knew that. I currently have a Nikon D50 and always use the USB cord to transfer the images to my computer for PP.

Is it really bad to do this? If so, why? What risks am I running?

What card reader do you recommend I purchase?

Thanks!!!

Upon the recommendation of Matt Antonino, I just got the SanDisk ImageMate card reader. It downloads a 1GB card in about 90 seconds. Its awesome!!

Yeah, you're better off using a card reader. For lots of reasons. You camrera's batter could run out in the middle. You could break the USP socket on the camera (not likely, but you could). It's probably faster with a card reader. And most of all, you can use your camera while the card is downloading.

You're usually better off getting a "professional" card reader. I've had several cheap ones just up and die on me for no reason. That's when I bought a couple of the stackable Lexar ones.

i concur with the doctor

USB can be super slow especially if your computer only has USB 1.0 which is still out there vs 2.0....go with the card reader if nothing else for the speed and flexibility...card readers are either USB or firewire and work on Mac OR PC
