Hi,
I have been having problems with my DVD/CD writer...it takes it about 45 minutes to an hour to write 1 full DVD with photos. Is that normal? When I first got my computer it took MUCH less time to write, but I can't remember how long. I'm breaking down the computer and taking it to the Dr. today, so wanted a quick indication of how long it should take to write a full DVD with images.
Thanks,
Laurie

I can write a 4.5 GB DVD in about 12 minutes, including the verify pass.
When I first installed it, it would take an hour to just write the dvd and the computer was really slow while it was accessing the DVD. I went into the system setup (F2 as my DELL is starting) and changed my secondary EIDE slave (where the DVD was installed) from NONE to AUTO (detect) which turned on DMA access and then everyting was fine.
It sounds like you don't have DMA enabled for your DVD drive.
My apologies if this sounds like greek (or geek) to you.

I bought an external Lacie. It flies. I think it paid for itself the first time I used it.

Thanks so much for the replies. I already had the settings that you described above, and so I took it in for a replacement drive. It is under waranty, so I'll have to wait a few days for the new part, but I got to keep my computer sans dvd writer for a few days.

Update...I had my DVD writer replaced (under warranty) and poof...it works wonderfully now. Fast...fast...fast. I had been told by a customer service rep at Photodes (proshow gold) that DVD writer either worked or not, but if it could write...it was not defective. Well, don't believe everything they tell you.
Happy ending...thanks for your help.
