Hey my name is Mark. I'm slowly trying ease my way into photography. I have been studying a lot and trying to learn. Osp has been very helpful. I recently bought a canon 30d. I can not set the camera down, I love it. My ultimate goal is to photograph dogs. While studying dog photography I found someone online (amandajones.com) that is very good at doing this. I'm trying to learn what she has for light gear. I know she uses a soft box but I don't know if she is shooting hot or strobe. Could some of you light gurus check out this video and tell me what she is using? http://www.amandajones.com/files/GMA.mov

Thanks

It's a Dyna-Lite Flash head.

But in this case, she may be shooting using just the modelling lamp. There's a lot of light on a tv set anyway.

I think the only reason you'd want to use hot lights is if the flash startles the animals - but the heat could be a problem too. And you're not going to be using them on location easily.

I think a portable solution would be the best choice for pets - Dyna-Lite has one, but you should check out Lumedyne. Their entire product line is designed to be portable. At B&H and at http://www.lumedyne.com

I think I would like to go strobe, but I am scared of scaring the animals.

I think that would depend on type of animal. And if you are shooting on location with mostly ambient light, it's not likely they will even notice the flash - particularly if you are using a softbox or umbrella.
