Ok, so I know it can be done! I have some music I want to use for a private slideshow and cannot figure out how in the world an MP4 format to an MP3 with a protected file.

Anyone???? I tried clicking on convert file to MP3 and it tells me it cannot convert protected files, sigh. I am so determined to learn how to do this! the song is not stolen, I purchased it fair and square.

The easiest way is to use a program that will record it from your sound card output. Technically it will be a bit lower quality, but it won't be noticeable for this application.

Here are some: http://www.mp3-recorder.net/

It's annoying, but I think the best way is to burn a music CD file (to a CD of course, make sure you don't burn an MP3/4 or make a data CD). Then you can re-rip the song in itunes as an MP3. (Check your preferences to make sure that iTunes imports CDs into the program as MP3s.

You guys are the best! I tried burning a cd with it, but I'll try again as well as the program. Arg, computers and I have a love/hate relationship:) Thanks for your support! I am pulling my hair out, at least now I'll still have a comb over wink.gif

Use audio hijack (google it). It works great.

Burning a cd is effectively the same as recording from your sound card - with the advantage that you don't need another software program (but you have to burn a cd). For a one-time deal that would work fine.

Thanks, Kev.

The burning of the cd thing was frustrating. No matter what I set in preferences it was burning an MP4. I'll google this as soon as I get to "work" and see if I can get the job done.

nope - the newest version of i tunes will thwart this too and the program I was using ("switch") also no longer works. Love my mac - hate itunes.
